Every version, in full.

What changed, what it costs, and what stayed compatible, from the first invited alpha on 23 August 2026 to the current beta. The same notes are readable offline inside the app under Settings → Release notes.

The application was called Atlas Studio until version 0.8.2; these notes use its current name throughout. The Atlas tab, Atlas plates and Atlas lettering keep their names — they describe the publication atlas the app draws. Builds are published on the Discord server.

CartoVox 0.8.3

Shape the world, then draw inside it

Version 0.8.3 includes every CartoVox change implemented after 0.8.2. The application has a new name and identity, while this release also adds a complete map-and-scene authoring system, world-derived settlement planning, reviewed world rebuild continuity, stronger manuscript interchange and focused world-generation improvements.

The application is now called CartoVox

  • New name and new artwork throughout: the window and browser-tab title, the header mark, the home logo, the installers, the desktop entry and every platform icon. The logo is supplied as two paintings, one for the dark theme and one for the parchment theme, because the plate behind the gold belongs to the drawing.
  • The dark theme is now called CartoVox Dark.
  • The portable Linux launcher is ./run-cartovox, renamed so the script and the CartoVox payload directory beside it cannot collide on a case-insensitive filesystem.
  • The Atlas tab, Atlas plates, Atlas lettering and the illustrated-atlas settings keep their names: those name the publication atlas the app draws, not the app.

Settings, saved files and data move to the new name

There is no automatic migration. Worlds and settings kept under the old name stay where they are and the new build will not read them; move them across by hand if you want them.

  • Worlds, settings, logs and update downloads now live under CartoVox in the per-user application-data directory, and under ~/.local/share/cartovox on Linux. The override variable is CARTOVOX_DATA_DIR.
  • Stored interface preferences use cartovox.* keys, so a browser profile that used the old build starts from defaults.
  • Existing signed beta access keys remain valid after the CartoVox rename. The verifier accepts both the established Atlas Studio audience and newly issued CartoVox keys while continuing to reject keys for any other product.
  • Project backups are project_backup.cartovox and coastline tracing drafts are .cartovox-trace.json. World recipes, art packs, tracing drafts, project backups and voxel samples declare cartovox-* formats, so files exported by 0.8.2 or earlier are not accepted.
  • Saved settlement geometry is cartovox-settlement-scene, source packages are cartovox-settlement-source, and artwork skins are cartovox-settlement-skin.
  • Recipe links use a #cartovox= fragment. Older settlement links and files are refused with an explanation rather than being misread.
  • Generator metadata uses cartovox-native, feature identities begin cartovox:, and exported SVG identifiers use the same prefix.
  • Downloads use CartoVox names for settlement recipes, scenes, tiles, PNGs, rendered SVGs and artwork catalogs.

More natural generation and direct world drawing

  • Mercator is available as a live saved-world view as well as an export, with the same geographic data and explicit polar limits.
  • Mountain belts grow as connected systems of ranges with their own internal grain and irregular margins instead of reading as one repeated ridge.
  • Drawn cities keep the exact location chosen on the canvas. A drawn realm absorbs settlements inside its border rather than generating a competing capital over the same ground.
  • The terrain-brush size slider uses a ratio scale with a practical upper bound, giving precise control over small edits without sacrificing broad strokes.
  • Generated-world Tectonics and Weather tools now read their saved evidence reliably, and compact class panels fit without hiding controls or forcing horizontal scrolling.
  • Labels use plain geographic wording for the share of land in the largest connected region.

Manuscript import and formatting fidelity

  • Manuscript import recognises chapter structure across varied headings and applies size limits to the actual writing rather than a small set of form fields.
  • Italics and other emphasis survive manuscript import, world-to-manuscript transfers and supported exports instead of appearing as typed markup.
  • Imported notes become native manuscript notes. Word export emits real footnotes, while tracked changes deliver revised prose as readers see it.
  • Thesis vocabulary analysis reads the complete manuscript sheet rather than only the visible editor controls.

Villages and towns are planned street-first

Settlements are rebuilt from the ground up. The generator used to choose an outline and scatter buildings inside it, so every village came out as the same blob of unaligned boxes. It now lays the street network first, takes the blocks enclosed by those streets, divides each block into plots, and fits a building to each plot facing its street. The settlement's outline is whatever the finished blocks add up to.

  • Eight plans that differ in structure rather than in jitter: street village, green, crossroads, radial, organic, harbour, hilltop and twin neighbourhoods. The plan is chosen from the approach roads, water and relief a saved world already records.
  • Every plot faces a street, and every building on one side of a street sits on a shared frontage line, so a row reads as a row.
  • Quarters differ: market, green, craft, townhouse, gentry, manor, temple, dockside, poor quarter and crofts each set their own plot size, coverage, setback and building forms. Poor quarters deliberately do not line up, and are grown as one district.
  • The sheet is sized from the settlement instead of from the annual land budget. A village used to occupy under one percent of its own map. Fields are now drawn as a working belt around the town, with a depth control, and the hectares beyond the sheet are reported rather than drawn.
  • A 40,000-person city generates in about a tenth of the time it used to take.

Settlement artwork is drawn, not stretched

  • Roofs are built from each building's own footprint, with ridges, hips and courses, so an L-shaped or long narrow house gets a roof that fits it. Previously one of six drawings was squashed to whatever rectangle it was given.
  • The catalogue grows from 30 to 57 pieces: eleven tree species, windmills, watermills, granaries, forges, chapels, gatehouses, fountains and troughs, beehives, livestock pens, woodpiles, fences, shrines, stocks, boats, jetties, and vineyard, flax and fallow field treatments.
  • Settlement colours now match the application's own art directions. Illustrated adventure is the default, with engraved and tabletop alongside it.
  • Fixed: artwork packs exported from the shared library could not be imported into Render Studio, because the two used different format names.
  • Fixed: recolouring a wood changed its backdrop but left the canopy in the old palette.

Designing a settlement by hand

  • Steer the generator directly: street density, plot size, building coverage, irregularity, the share given to poor quarters, and how far the countryside reaches.
  • Choose artwork by looking at it. The flat list of every asset is replaced by a picker showing the drawings themselves, filtered to what the chosen feature can actually use, with search and an explicit automatic option.
  • Place features on the canvas and have them turn to face the nearest street, or scatter a copse of trees in one click that undoes as a single step.
  • Draw a quarter on the map and rebuild only that part. The streets and every building outside it stay exactly where they are.
  • The settlement form explains itself: it says which planner is active and why a control is unavailable, the scene name sits beside Save instead of inside the import panel, colour channels are named for what they paint, and an unsaved draft can be restored from the first screen rather than from a panel you cannot open yet.

Additional map, scene and world authoring work

  • Open standalone scenes reliably even when a world-only feature-lettering helper is unavailable. Scene creation now keeps its shared recipe editor active instead of falling back to a form reload, while the world editor reports an explicit missing-tool error if that required helper fails to load.
  • Label saved realms, terrain regions, major rivers, roads and sea lanes directly in Render Studio. The guided chooser loads automatically from the open world's masks, hydrology and route geometry, then creates ordinary editable captions with appropriate hierarchy, typeface, spacing and role ink. Names follow evidence-backed interior or feature paths, stay upright automatically and can slide along or beside the line. Undo, documents, recipes, backups, previews, PNG/tiles and editable SVG retain the result without renaming or moving canonical geography. Render bundles now also receive the active editor composition instead of a browser click-event default.
  • Turn generated world terrain into editable native artwork from Render Studio. Light, Balanced and Rich conversion reads saved relief, tectonics, biome, canopy, wetlands and snowline, preserves natural feature proportions, places mountains, hills, volcanoes, trees and reeds on their own drawing layer, and turns off the matching procedural layers. Every converted mark supports the existing move/style/mask/group/delete tools; repeated conversions avoid duplicates and one Undo restores the procedural map without changing simulation data.
  • Track the complete six-map showcase as one world-and-linked-scenes cohort. Render Studio now shows Ready, Needs correction and Missing for every brief, recommends the next unfinished map, and ranks explicitly chosen composition, artwork, painting, lettering, isometric or table-usability gaps. Version-2 review evidence travels with documents, recipes, manifests and bundle notes; older reviews remain readable.
  • Integrate the map, scene and settlement authoring work with the current CartoVox shell. The four-workspace dashboard, Map Gallery, manuscript tools and current saved-world navigation remain in place; Library now presents Scenes, Map Gallery and project import together with responsive wrapping. Standalone authoring pages and project backup filenames use CartoVox identity, while established atlas interchange contracts remain compatible.
  • Coordinate an entire world map or local scene with Illustrated adventure, Engraved parchment or Clear tabletop art directions. Preview the real result without changing the document, apply palette/linework/lettering/markers/atmosphere as one Undo step, optionally harmonize editable vectors, and retain authored content, geometry, lights, textures, canvas scale and imported images through recipes, saved maps, backups and render manifests. The scene control lives under Layers & style, while the world control leads Render Studio.
  • Place saved geographic names with an adaptive hierarchy-aware layout. Primary, Secondary and Supporting labels try eight sides before lower-priority names are omitted; Spacious, Balanced and Detailed density presets control map-wide crowding. Filter placement diagnostics, promote or demote names, choose a side, force an intentional overlap, add leader lines or move text directly on the preview. Settings use unified Undo/Redo and persist through maps, recipes, backups, seamless PNG tiles and editable labels.svg output without changing canonical world places.
  • Light scenes directly on the map with saved Warm interior, Moonlit exterior and Dusk starting moods. Add, drag, name and tune up to 32 lights; adjust overall darkness and shadow colour; Undo/Redo every change; and retain the lighting layer through maps, versions, recipes, backups, PNG tiles and editable SVG. The controls stay grouped in the scene Layers inspector and explain that this is authored atmosphere rather than simulated visibility.
  • Compose drawing layers independently in scenes and Render Studio. Each layer now has saved opacity, Normal/Multiply/Screen blending and non-destructive canvas-space erase/restore masks. Erasers stay inside their layer; editor preview, PNG/tiles, editable SVG, recipes, documents, versions and backups use the same result. Old layers migrate automatically, and advanced controls stay in one explained disclosure.
  • Work beside the scene canvas instead of hunting through a long control stack. Draw and arrange now has direct Select, Stamp, Path / wall, Area, Brush and Erase tools plus a contextual Tool/Objects/Arrange/Look/Layers inspector. It reports the active object and instruction, opens the right context from tool search, supports keyboard tabs, and stacks cleanly on compact screens while preserving the existing editing, Undo, save and export behavior.
  • Review a versioned local-regeneration boundary before rebuilding a sculpted world. CartoVox now records the saved-grid footprint, date-line-safe bounds, affected pipeline stages, protection overlap, concrete partial-solve blockers, revision and edit SHA-256; the same portable JSON evidence remains available in comparison drafts. Apply still runs the full-world solver until checkpoints, boundary conditions, blending and independent feature locks are implemented.
  • Review and transfer authored culture, faith and place-of-power canon when saving a rebuilt copy. Search destinations using hearth, environment, sacred-site, kind and location context; preview exact field changes behind concise disclosures; retain generated and measured anchors; and resolve occupied fields through the existing atomic swap/chain workflow. Lore, Codex pages, handbooks, exports and the reconciliation archive update inside the temporary-copy transaction while the original world remains unchanged.
  • Resolve occupied realm-canon destinations as reviewed swaps or chains. The first move remains visibly blocked until its related owner moves, with a direct review shortcut and one combined plan. Accepted copies vacate and refill ruler/motto fields atomically; competing fields and unsupported owners remain blocked.
  • Review realm ruler and motto transfers after a world rebuild: search for a destination, preview generated and authored values, and explicitly include the move. Other canon fields stay put; unsupported occupancy and stale evidence are blocked. Supported occupied destinations use the coordinated workflow above. Accepted copies refresh lore/exports and retain a revision-backed audit record, with the original world unchanged.
  • Reconnect individual scenes after accepting a rebuilt world: preview current and proposed context, explicitly retain or clear the regional map, and save against confirmed identity evidence. Former context is retained; stale previews are blocked and successful retries are safe. Scene artwork and both worlds stay unchanged.
  • Resolve copied settlement-name owners during rebuild review: propose keeping or archiving an unresolved name, preview the combined final labels, and include releases with related transfers. Accepted copies retain released choices, locks and notes in their reconciliation archive; lore and exports update atomically. Identity decisions remain separate and the original world stays unchanged.
  • Scale settlement countryside by population and an editable agricultural land budget. Generate extensive connected farms, readable crop types, dense orchards and connected biome woodland; report local acreage and regional food-supply needs. New Town/Countryside views keep expanded maps navigable. Field edits recalculate the report. These are explicit planning assumptions, not measured food yields.
  • Use one 40-step Undo/Redo history across world maps and scenes: artwork, captions, drawing layers, masks, place lettering, appearance, recipes, canvas/grid and output settings now follow one clearly labelled timeline. Object edits restore their selection and active layer, keyboard shortcuts work from the canvas, divergent edits clear Redo, and reopening a saved map starts a fresh session while retaining saved content and versions.
  • Load and apply settlement data automatically when choosing a place; preserve layout overrides when changing season, and prevent stale responses from changing the active selection. Replace repeated rectangular defaults and bent grids with varied terrain-biased plans and branching street networks. Add connected farm groups with strip fields, furrows, orchards, editable hedges and working buildings, retaining access identities and placement diagnostics in saved/exported geometry.
  • Generate villages and cities from saved world settlements with paged search, seasonal terrain/climate/farming evidence and editable design suggestions. Add varied footprints and direct editing of buildings, trees, fields, roads, water and defences: move, reshape, style, label, add/delete and undo. Edited geometry stays paired with SVG/PNG/tiles, recovery and saved scenes; source evidence travels with the map. Matching world identities link automatically. Regional data guides local design; exact street-level terrain and river banks remain authored approximations.
  • Make settlement scenery more natural: orchard trees keep their proportions in irregular plots, crop rows follow field boundaries, woodland forms uneven groves, and useful scenery sits near buildings or fields. Continuous ground replaces the hard green circle. Wall gates now appear where roads actually cross, fixing repeated gate tiles along the perimeter. Generate a new plan to use these changes.
  • Enrich generated villages and towns with 28 native vector assets: layered oak, birch, pine, palm and acacia trees; varied roofs and civic landmarks; wells, carts, barrels, gardens and orchards. Groves and scenery follow the landscape and avoid occupied or wet ground. Browse the artwork in a categorized gallery, inspect it with map zoom, and retain detail in SVG/PNG, tiles and saved scenes.
  • Replace the settlement dependency and its artwork with CartoVox-native generation, geometric artwork and file codecs. Choose winding lanes, grids, ring towns or roadside plans; use native medieval/technological/crystal styles, custom polygon skins, landmarks, water recipes and complete native recipe URLs. Generation, scene saving, recovery, map navigation and vector/tile exports remain available. Earlier experimental formats are intentionally unsupported on this branch. The previous GPL component is removed from the current distribution; original notices remain in Git history.
  • Use CartoVox Settlement Studio with zoom, Fit map and directional pan controls inside the map view. Drag, scroll or use keyboard shortcuts to inspect details; preview navigation leaves saved geometry unchanged. Everyday labels use CartoVox naming.
  • Browse filtered rebuild identity results across all pages on a map. Nearby records share numbered markers with paged, keyboard-accessible choices. Open a result or preview a manual-pair candidate by location; confirmation remains separate. Original/rebuilt geography, pan/zoom and missing-location explanations stay inside optional map sections.
  • Compare original and rebuilt settlement locations or route paths on synchronized maps inside identity review and manual-pair previews. Fit/world views, zoom, drag and keyboard panning, date-line wrapping, distinct symbols and self-contained SVG downloads keep the evidence accessible. Map snapshots survive saved reviews, revisions and backups. Missing geometry and preview simplification are disclosed; viewing maps never confirms identity.
  • Review and apply confirmed settlement-name swaps, cycles and chains together. The collapsed preview shows every owner, destination, lock and final label; one include/remove action handles the complete group. Metadata stays with each name, unresolved owners stay blocked, and later lore saves do not swap exported labels back. Existing background preparation, rollback and revision/backup recovery apply.
  • Apply eligible reviewed settlement names when saving a rebuilt copy. Name choices and matching rename overrides move together; the old ID regains its verified generated name. Background acceptance uses a temporary full-world copy, strictly rebuilds lore, Codex, handbooks, existing city plans and text/vector exports, preserves confirmed identities, and publishes only the completed result. Progress, disk/time disclosure, app-close awareness, stale-file guards and retry recovery are included. Release records survive revisions and backup imports without rewriting original generation provenance. Rendered atlas labels still need refresh; unconfirmed occupied destinations and ambiguous names remain blocked. Reviewed swaps/chains use the grouped workflow above.
  • Preserve generation naming baselines through full rebuilds, revisions and project backup imports. Author-name reviews now distinguish verified generated fallbacks and actual lore-input names from older registry estimates, with explicit changed/incomplete evidence. Repeat renames follow chosen minor-town names through generated prose and existing text/vector exports. Coverage stays collapsed. Eligible reviewed name transfers use the workflow above; rendered labels retain their existing refresh workflow.
  • Preview author-name transfers in rebuild reviews. Filter Author names, inspect confirmed destinations and recorded fallback labels, and see conflicts between saved name records, occupied/locked destinations and duplicate text. Related records and coverage details stay collapsed. Previews update with identity decisions and persist in JSON exports and saved-copy reports. Previewing alone changes no names. Eligible selected transfers use the workflow above; rendered labels still require refresh.
  • Apply selected campaign and regional reference changes when saving a rebuilt copy. Review each confirmed destination, include or remove the change, and inspect the selected count before saving. Duplicate list destinations block acceptance until resolved; identity changes clear selections for re-review. Stale-file checks and journaled recovery protect interrupted saves. Applied changes and their report persist through revisions and backups. Eligible settlement names and their lore use the transfer workflow above; other canon, historical snapshots and scene context still require separate reconciliation.
  • Review reference impacts before saving a rebuilt world. A collapsed, searchable report shows checked name choices, campaign reveals, regional/lore references and scene links alongside confirmed destinations or unresolved issues. Filter and page results, inspect coverage warnings, and download the full JSON report. Identity decisions update recommendations, and accepted copies retain the evidence. Selected campaign/regional changes and eligible settlement names can now be applied through the flows above; other references still need reconciliation and existing scenes stay with the original world.
  • Correct a rejected automatic settlement/route match by releasing both records for manual pairing. Review the consequences before release; choose new partners and confirm identities separately. Keep the original proposal as evidence and restore it as rejected only when both records are free. Existing endpoint, one-to-one, stale-source and accepted-copy guards remain enforced; saved decisions and evidence persist through reload, JSON export, revisions and backups.
  • Pair unmatched original settlements and routes with searched, paged rebuilt candidates and a before/after review. Settlements can change tier; routes require the same travel type and confirmed endpoint correspondence. Manual proposals need separate identity confirmation, exclude already-paired records, and can be removed to restore unmatched rows and clear dependent route confirmations. Pairings persist across reload, accepted-copy review and JSON export. Rejected automatic proposals can be released for reassignment.
  • Keep new rebuild drafts reviewable when generated map display caches refresh. Authored files, saved world data and referenced simulation inputs still invalidate stale comparisons. Existing drafts retain their original freshness checks.
  • Confirm, reject or clear proposed settlement/route identity matches before accepting a rebuilt copy. Review up to 20 eligible unchanged pairs on the visible page; earlier rejections are preserved. Routes require confirmed endpoints, and changing an endpoint clears dependent route confirmations. Confirmed identities and review evidence persist in the accepted copy, revisions and backups; unreviewed records receive separate identities. Original canon and scene links remain unchanged.
  • Review which settlements and routes correspond across completed rebuilds. Search and filter 20 results per page, inspect before/after evidence, and download the full JSON report. Nearby-name matches and ambiguous or missing records remain explicit; generated list IDs never establish identity by themselves. No canon or scene links are automatically changed.
  • See where a completed rebuild changed terrain, climate, coasts, rivers, lakes and biomes. Expand Where did things change, select a field and download a PNG with its legend. Changed-cell counts use the original grid; reduced previews retain isolated changes and mark mixed directions. Older reports explain when spatial maps are unavailable.
  • Build an isolated completed-world comparison draft from pending sculpt edits. Inspect measured elevation, land/sea, climate, biome, river and lake changes plus paired map thumbnails; then save a separate rebuilt world or discard it. The original world, pending edits and scene links remain available. Drafts survive reload, support safe cancellation, reject changed sources, and recover interrupted acceptance without duplicating the new world. This is a full rebuild, with extra time and disk cost; selective local regeneration remains future work; reviewed entity correspondence is supported above.
  • Organize Scenes and encounter maps into six tasks: canvas/grid, drawing, text, layers/appearance, connections and export/backups. Search opens nested settings and moves focus to the result. Keep Save and Preview together, put the drawing canvas before secondary controls, collapse exact properties/effects/recipes, and explain ambiguous units and multipliers with keyboard/touch Help. Button rows wrap on narrow screens. Existing artwork and backup formats are retained.
  • Calibrate a full-detail reference image on a whole-world sheet using two image landmarks and two clicked or entered world locations. Review the Plate Carrée placement before Apply; position, rotation and uniform scale preserve image proportions. Control points travel with maps, saved versions, recipes, backups, render manifests and SVG metadata. Undo restores placement/calibration; manual transform edits clear stale calibration. Local scenes keep canvas alignment. Other projections, date-line wrapping, regional crops and warping remain unsupported; two matches do not establish accuracy elsewhere.
  • Connect authored lore records across imported batches in the same world: choose the exact target batch/record, review both identities and save. Links belong to their source batch; incoming navigation, persistent history and JSON external target IDs/status travel with world backups. Missing, trashed or unreadable targets retain their saved identity; restoring the original batch reconnects them. Reviews reject intervening target/source changes. Existing local links keep their identities; the first external link upgrades its owner to relationship state v2, which older v1-only builds cannot edit. Automatic source relationship conversion remains separate work.
  • Connect typed lore records within an imported batch using reviewed, directed relationships: Related to, Member of, Located in and Participated in. Search names/aliases, choose the exact source-numbered target, review and save; duplicate names and source wiki links never pick targets automatically. Incoming/outgoing links support navigation, removal, persistent batch-wide Undo/Redo and structured JSON export. Stale reviews reject, retries do not duplicate links, and batch trash/world backups retain links and history. Cross-batch links are supported above; automatic source relationship conversion remains separate work.
  • Review CSV/Markdown rows as notes or explicit place, character, faction and event records before importing. Typed authored records retain names, aliases, source provenance and Markdown, with per-batch filtering and structured JSON export. Places can copy validated latitude/longitude only when selected; pins, location Undo/Redo, GeoJSON and typed exports share the same saved positions. Imports retain originals and reports, reject stale reviews, retry without duplicate records and travel with recoverable batches/world backups. Generated canon and simulation entities are unchanged; relationship conversion remains separate work.
  • Move complete artwork groups between parents by dragging hierarchy rows or using the searchable, keyboard-accessible parent picker. Top level removes the parent. Positions, drawing layers, object order, names, hidden members and inner groups are preserved; moves support one-step Undo and existing saved maps, recipes and scene backups. Cycles, paths deeper than eight levels, locked source/destination artwork and stale drags are rejected. Empty ancestors disappear when no objects retain them.
  • Optionally snap dragged artwork and complete groups to visible object/group frame edges and centers, with temporary alignment guides and a six-screen-pixel threshold that follows canvas zoom. Hold Alt to bypass artwork snapping; existing grid snapping remains available. Locked artwork can be an alignment target; hidden artwork and erasers are excluded as targets. Translation stays in preview until release, supports Escape/pointer-cancel/lost-capture recovery and one-step Undo, and preserves group spacing through saved maps, recipes and backups. Guides and the per-open-map switch are not exported or saved.
  • Browse artwork groups in a collapsible hierarchy with Expand/Collapse All, Show Selected Group, keyboard navigation and separate focus/selection states. Search finds full parent paths even inside collapsed branches; paging keeps at most 100 shown groups on screen. Rows retain descendant counts and hidden/locked feedback. Collapsing changes navigation only: selection, artwork, Undo, saved maps and portable exports are preserved; branch state resets when reopening or switching maps.
  • Add Stone fortifications to Original artwork kits: curtain wall, corner wall, ruined wall, square tower, round tower, twin-tower gatehouse, stone bridge and stone stairs. The catalog now has 32 editable pieces in four collections and three palettes, with wall, tower and crossing categories. Copies use the existing editing, structure-library, Undo/Redo, saved-map, backup and PNG/SVG workflows. Walls and gates are independent artwork without automatic joining, door state or simulation effects.
  • Add Terrain and landscape to Original artwork kits: broadleaf grove, conifer stand, fallen log, brush patch, boulder cluster, rocky outcrop, reed pond and stepping-stone ford. The catalog now includes 24 editable assemblies across three collections and three palettes, with vegetation, rock and water filters. Placed pieces support existing group editing, library reuse, Undo/Redo, saved scenes, backups and PNG/SVG exports. These illustrations do not change simulated terrain, water or vegetation.
  • World-backup imports now reconnect parent/child scene relationships and scene-map hotspots between included scenes, using original identities and creation times. External or mismatched references remain available for manual reconnection. Every linked scene is validated before publication; interrupted imports recover as a set with their world, and ownership checks protect existing projects. Saved maps and versions retain their artwork. World backups still include only active scenes explicitly linked to that world, excluding unlinked descendants and trash.
  • Add eight original editable interior pieces: linen bed, dining table and benches, round table and stools, stone hearth, filled bookcase, barrel pair, travel chest and woven rug. Original artwork kits now offer Village exteriors and Rooms and furnishings, with collection-specific categories and three palettes. Place independent copies, customize parts, reuse them through the structure library, and retain existing Undo, saved maps, backups and PNG/SVG export support.
  • Copy an active artwork object's style and preview it on selected objects or complete visible, unlocked groups. Choose colors, line settings, opacity and effects independently; blending is opt-in. Apply supports one-step Undo/Redo and existing saved maps, recipes and backups. Preview stays out of autosave and exports; targets keep geometry, names, groups, textures, image pixels and masks. Copied values last while the editor is open.
  • Name nested artwork groups and find them in a searchable hierarchy list, with 100 groups per page, complete descendant selection, parent paths and hidden/locked member counts. Rename supports Undo/Redo; new objects inherit group names, and duplicates/structures keep independent identities and names through saved maps, recipes, backups and SVG metadata. Names do not change geometry or lock/visibility behavior.
  • Rotate reference images with quarter-turn buttons or an exact angle, and align two image landmarks with two canvas destinations to set position, angle and scale together. Alignment supports a temporary preview, keyboard placement, backtracking, cancellation and one-step Undo/Redo. Rotated fit, saved maps, recipes, backups, SVG and tiled PNG exports preserve the transform without resampling the stored image. Alignment is to the canvas; geographic metadata, warping and terrain are not imported.
  • Place imported Codex notes on the world map with click placement, zoom, keyboard controls and optional exact coordinates. Each page has one optional pin with persistent batch Undo/Redo, map-to-note navigation and GeoJSON export. Moving an import to trash hides its pins; restore and project backups retain locations and history. Original notes and terrain stay intact.
  • Import CSV lore rows and Markdown files from Write → Codex → Import lore. Review and select pages, inspect duplicates and wiki-link matches, and retain skipped/invalid rows in a downloadable preservation report. Imports create independent author-owned vault pages with lossless original-file downloads, bounded storage, retry protection and recoverable batch trash/restore. Kinds, aliases and extra fields remain readable notes; generated lore and terrain are unchanged. Project backups retain active and trashed batches.
  • Import a full-detail PNG/JPEG reference beneath editable map artwork, with canvas placement, fit, opacity, independent editor/export visibility and Undo/Redo. Original pixel dimensions are retained within 8 MiB, 8192-pixel-side and 16-million-pixel limits; images travel with saved versions, recipes and backups. Image metadata and editable source layers are not imported. PNG/SVG inclusion is optional; recipes and render manifests always retain the reference. Portable recipes now accept up to 32 MiB; art packs and structures remain at 16 MiB.
  • Nest artwork groups up to eight levels without flattening their children. Enter a group to edit, transform or arrange its contents; return to its parent or the whole map. Ungroup removes one level, duplicates and placed structures keep independent ancestry, and Undo/Redo, saved maps, recipes, structures, scene backups and SVG metadata preserve nesting. Invalid depth/parent relationships are rejected; rejected object edits now restore the selection immediately. Files saved with group ancestry require a build that supports it.
  • Choose a fixed transform pivot by clicking the canvas, selecting the selection/canvas center, or entering exact percentages. Rotation, proportional resize, side stretching and numeric transforms use that origin; the crosshair supports keyboard movement. The guide stays fixed while editing the current selection, resets on selection/map/canvas-shape changes, and stays out of saved artwork and exports. Transformed geometry supports existing Undo/Redo, saved maps, recipes and backups.
  • Resize selection width or height with side handles. Rotated objects and complete groups sharing axes (including quarter turns) get an oriented frame; mixed-angle selections retain proportional corners. Side resizing anchors the opposite edge, respects shared size/aspect/canvas limits, and supports keyboard controls, cancellation, Undo/Redo and existing saved/exported formats.
  • Add clickable scene-map hotspots with direct preview placement, keyboard position controls, editable labels/destinations and Undo. Pins belong to individual saved map documents; navigation saves map edits and opens the destination preview. Trashed destinations retain recoverable references. Scene-tree imports reconnect internal hotspot destinations, while single-scene imports retain original destinations for explicit reconnection. Navigation pins are excluded from artwork exports.
  • Export and import connected scene trees, including saved map versions and artwork. Imported copies use new scene identities and reconnect internal parents; external parent/world context is retained for explicit reconnection. Packages validate checksums, hierarchy and capacity before publication, with rollback and interrupted-import recovery. Tree backups support 24 MiB compressed, 512 MiB expanded and 10,000 files. Trash branches are excluded.
  • Organize scenes into parent/child hierarchies with up to eight levels, breadcrumbs, child navigation and child-scene creation. Reparenting rejects cycles, excessive depth and stale edits. Trashed parents leave their children available; restoration reconnects durable references. Individual scene backups retain original parent context for explicit reconnection after import.
  • Build villages with an original eight-piece vector kit: cottages, longhouses, workshops, shrines, market stalls, wells, gardens and carts. Browse previews in three palettes, place independent grouped copies, edit their parts, and save variants using the shared structure library. Undo, drawing layers, recipes, backups and PNG/SVG exports use existing map objects.
  • Align selected objects and complete groups by edges or centers, using selection bounds, the active object/group or the canvas. Equal horizontal/vertical gaps keep outer items fixed, groups retain their internal layout, and each arrangement supports Undo/Redo and saved maps. Locked/hidden selections, insufficient space and out-of-bounds moves cannot cause partial changes; unchanged arrangements do not add Undo entries.
  • Resize and rotate selected stamps, shapes and complete groups directly on the canvas. Corner handles resize proportionally; the rotation handle supports 15-degree Shift snapping. Keyboard controls, Escape/pointer cancellation and Undo/Redo are supported. Transform previews stay unsaved until release, honor locks and bounds, and retain masks, curves, textures and existing portable formats. Canvas focus no longer scrolls tall scenes during a drag.
  • Save individual artwork in a shared local catalog, search names/packs/tags, and reuse it across worlds and scenes as stamps or shape textures. Preview, rename, export art packs, and recover entries from trash. Map copies stay independent; reuse supports Undo and respects layer locks and capacity. Art imports now clear stale success messages when switching maps and show when a pack is being read.
  • Save reusable structures to a shared on-device library with previews, names, tags and source labels. Search, reload and place them in any scene or world; export portable files and recover entries from trash. Library removal leaves placed copies intact, stale updates are rejected, and changing the save folder copies the catalog.
  • Organize stamps, shapes and reusable structures in up to 32 named drawing layers. Reorder, show/hide, lock and move selections between layers; removing a layer keeps its objects on Base. Layer edits support Undo/Redo, saved versions, portable recipes and backups, with matching PNG/SVG stack and visibility.
  • Scene links explain empty regional-map choices, provide a Create a regional map shortcut, and refresh map/place choices without discarding selections. Regional child-map creation waits for the latest lens summary, preventing stale locations after quick region changes.
  • Save selected artwork as reusable structure files and place copies in other maps by clicking the canvas or choosing Place at center. Copies preserve masks, curves, hidden objects and locks; use fresh IDs, reuse matching images and undo together. Spacing survives canvas-shape changes, with adjustable placement scale.
  • Map compositions support 1,000 objects, searchable and filtered object pages, and faster ordinary dragging that retains existing SVG artwork. Group edits work across pages; add and copy actions explain capacity limits. Deep eraser stacks export without recursive serialization, and undoing back to a saved composition clears stale saving feedback.
  • Custom art libraries support 96 assets and 8 MiB of PNG data, with batch image import, pack/usage filters, capacity feedback and undoable unused-art cleanup. Repeated SVG stamps share their embedded image, and undo avoids copying PNG strings. Art-pack imports accept up to 16 MiB; portable recipes now accept 32 MiB.
  • Link standalone scenes to worlds, regional maps and mapped lore places. Open linked scenes from the world or place, return to their context, and keep references when targets disappear. World backups include linked scenes and reconnect imported copies; standalone scene imports retain their source context for explicit reconnection.
  • Create scenes and encounter maps directly from the World Library without generating a world. Standalone scenes have saved documents and versions, PNG/SVG rendering, portable scene backups, and recoverable trash. Their workspace shows local scene controls and rejects geographic recipes.
  • Encounter scenes support square, landscape and portrait canvas proportions. Previews, saved maps, PNG/SVG exports and tiles preserve the chosen shape and local author coordinates. Scene views no longer offer geographic measurement.
  • Render Studio maps now save with their world, including artwork and map textures. Save named copies, reopen maps, and restore recent versions. Project backups include these documents; conflicting saves preserve open edits and desktop closing waits for pending map saves.
  • Fixed the More menu beside Compare on candidate world cards being clipped by the card.
  • Drawing tool options and brush controls now scroll within their own rows on smaller screens; history, Close, and save controls remain reachable.
  • Added a visible Change map action in the import review, including while reading a file or after an import error.

  • Coastline review keeps open correction and reading sections and their scroll position while recalculating. Applying a traced coastline keeps the preview open for further editing.
  • Coastline tracing now saves recoverable drafts on the device, including unfinished outlines, the reference image, zoom/pan and recent undo history. Resume tracing from Create, or save/load portable .atlas-trace.json files. Desktop closing waits for the final tracing save.
  • Added GeoJSON land-outline import and ASCII/binary STL and OBJ terrain import through the coastline review workflow.

  • Draw your world can save PNG, GeoJSON, STL, and OBJ. Complete project saves remain available as .cartovox backups.

Terrain interchange transfers outlines or elevation surfaces; simulation and project content are preserved by .cartovox backups. STL/OBJ exports are open Z-up surfaces in metres. See docs/terrain-interchange.md for supported geometry, working resolutions, and printing preparation.

  • Protect sculpt areas from later terrain brushes using World → Sculpt → Protect area. Circular boundaries support preview, Undo/Redo, reload and saved applied-edit disable/remove. Earlier sculpt edits remain. Erosion, climate, rivers and settlements still regenerate; this does not yet freeze terrain through a full local rebuild.
  • Preserve saved terrain through regeneration with World → Sculpt → Preserve terrain. Saved elevation survives terrain brushes, glaciation and erosion, including earlier pending brushes. Versioned snapshots retain protected heights through revision restore and project backups. Rivers and other world systems still regenerate across the full world. Ordinary Protect area retains its sculpt-only behavior.
  • Review sculpt rebuilds before Apply: see measured pending terrain changes, preserved/released areas, full rebuild scope, local runtime estimates and accurate revision recovery wording. Cancelling preserves the draft and starts no job. Changed applied history is marked unmeasured; edits or world changes during review require a fresh review. Rivers and other downstream outcomes are not predicted by this lightweight review.
  • Build settlement water systems from editable rivers, lakes, coasts, ponds, reservoirs, springs, wells, cisterns and groundwater areas. Saved-world hydrology, seasonal flow and aquifer evidence load with the selected place; a visible report explains regional context, local sources, demand, modeled well capacity and limitations across exports and saved scenes.
  • Make saved-world settlement water and approach roads visibly automatic. Manual fields stay inside an explicit override section, changes receive an override badge, and Reset restores current world evidence. Settlement Studio click targets now have consistent pointer and hover feedback, with distinct text, map-pan, drawing and disabled cursors.
  • Fix saved-world settlement generation for fractional river bearings and widths. Selecting a place now opens its automatic water overview, keeps every water/road value available under Change, and reveals any invalid field instead of making Generate appear unresponsive.
  • Grow automatic settlement boundaries from overlapping seeded neighbourhoods instead of recurring geometric envelopes. Terrain, water and street context guide irregular, clustered, valley, waterside, hillside and twin forms; exact round and planned rectangular towns remain explicit choices, and the clearing, streets, buildings, walls and gates use the same editable footprint.
  • Stop settlement roads and walls at exact water boundaries, and draw ordinary roads beneath surface water. River crossings are now a limited, spaced set chosen by road importance and span length, with editable bridge features linked to their source roads; ponds, lakes and coasts no longer acquire arbitrary automatic bridges.
  • Build a reproducible six-map visual release cohort from one saved world and four native-vector scenes, with retained review scores, machine timings, checksums and source-world immutability checks.
  • Keep local scene captions visible by default above opaque scene paper, artwork, lighting and the encounter grid while preserving explicit authored layer orders.

Release validation

  • The integrated non-E2E product gate passes 4,863 checks with 8 expected skips; all eight require the optional native atlas_alloc extension, which is not built in the test environment.
  • The desktop Chromium gate collected 279 cases. Across ordered gate segments, all 278 runnable cases passed; one private-reference painted-map case was skipped because its optional local image was not supplied.
  • The final CartoVox settlement naming merge was followed by 101 focused checks, 22 settlement browser cases and 23 affected adjacent browser cases. The final import, showcase and object-editor group passed 33 responsive cases across desktop, laptop and compact layouts.

CartoVox 0.8.2

Write with the world beside you

Version 0.8.2 includes every CartoVox change implemented after 0.8.1. It turns the manuscript desk into a world-aware word processor, adds a cross-world map gallery and the Gott double-sided projection, expands terrain interchange and coastline tracing, and strengthens data safety, scientific reporting, packaging and first-run licensing.

World placement and terrain interchange

  • Nations now offer a homeland map pin with a visible search area and plain-language size choices. Exact latitude, longitude and distance fields remain optional, with explanations for authors who want precise control.
  • Fixed the More menu beside Compare on candidate world cards being clipped by the card. Drawing tool options and brush controls now scroll within their own rows on smaller screens, while history, Close and save controls remain reachable.

A world-aware manuscript word processor

  • The manuscript desk is now composed from dedicated editor, storage, binder, world, panel, reader and export modules. The split preserves existing books while giving each writing surface one shared save and history contract.
  • Prose Insights measures words, sentence and paragraph shape, repeated word families, dialogue, dialogue tags, adverbs, filter words, phrases, openers and names from the active world. View chapter, book or series results, draw four lenses over the prose, and save reports as CSV, Markdown or JSON.
  • Scenes live as durable markers inside chapter text with titles, point of view, place, time and summary in the manuscript manifest. The Chapter panel and binder follow the current scene, scenes can move without losing history, and the Outline view lays out the book by scene.
  • Link a scene to a gazetteer place and a day in the world's year. The writing panel can show its date, season, moon, sunrise and sunset, saved weather, climate, realm, culture, language, and distance or travel time from the previous scene. Insert selected facts or a relief crop into the prose.
  • Gazetteer names are recognised beside the draft. Open a dossier from a name, create private character pages for unknown people, and check scene order, travel time and climate against the saved world.
  • Find and replace supports case, whole words and regular expressions in one chapter or across a book with history. Add anchored notes, named versions, paragraph-and-word diffs and paragraph restore.
  • Focus mode, timed sprints, a daily goal and streak, a shortcuts sheet and paragraph styles support longer writing sessions. Styles carry into Read, Word, HTML and EPUB; HTML and EPUB join the existing export formats.

Cleaner PDF and prose import

  • PDF import now removes repeating headers and page numbers using a digit-independent signature, joins wrapped lines into paragraphs across page breaks, repairs split hyphenated words and kerned digits, and recognises short capitalised headings. Large novel PDFs import as chapters instead of hundreds of line fragments.
  • Dialogue quote style is detected per chapter unless the book fixes it. Single-quote books receive dialogue analysis, and irregular past-tense words count as dialogue tags only when they are actual speech verbs.
  • The binder's Open beside action appears on hover, keeping the writing outline quieter when it is not needed.

Gott double-sided disk maps

  • Gott joins Equal Earth, Robinson and Mollweide anywhere Atlas offers a projection. The northern hemisphere occupies one disk and the southern another, with the equator as their shared rim and the southern face mirrored so coastlines meet when printed back to back.
  • Server projection, embedded metadata, browser hover readings, overlays, saved Create choices, the map catalogue and PNG export all use the same two-disk geometry. Illustrated world plates fit both disks completely within their layout.
  • The Planet panel can switch between a sphere and two interactive disks. Click to choose a disk centre, drag or spin around the shared axis, reset to the poles, and choose a light or dark printable background.

Keeping saved work safe

  • The numerical world archive is written beside the current file and swapped in only when complete. An interrupted write can no longer leave a truncated archive that later looks healthy.
  • Terrain edits render new atlas plates in staging and replace old plates only after a result exists. Failed plates are deferred for later, and cancellation or memory exhaustion keeps the atlas already on disk.
  • Terrain edits and accepted erosion settings use the seed recorded by the world. A stale editor with a different seed must reload instead of rebuilding another planet under the same identity.
  • An unreadable edits file is reported and preserved beside the world, and saving is refused until it is repaired. Atlas no longer interprets corruption as an empty edit set.
  • Re-simulation after terrain editing can be cancelled while computation is still safe to stop. The option disappears before the first world file is rewritten so maps and data cannot diverge.
  • Forgetting a saved weather sheet, removing the display cache and deleting a manuscript note now ask first. Write shortcuts no longer fire while typing in a chapter-plan field, search box or note.
  • Routes now act on the library root they were given. Test runs are guarded from writing indexes, identities or mutations into the author's real world library.
  • Library gains a Map gallery showing every illustrated plate, style render and city plan from every saved world on one wall, newest first. Filter by world, kind and lettering, open a sheet in a lightbox, then jump directly to that sheet in its Atlas tab or open the world.
  • A sheet drawn before a later terrain edit, rename or canon edit says so. The gallery reads existing files and draws nothing; its thumbnails reuse removable Atlas preview cache entries.

Honest numbers and a lighter dashboard

  • Simulation health now runs the river-network checks used by the scientific validator. Reaches flowing uphill and branching outside the dendritic band produce warnings, while Hack's exponent is reported for context. A world with uphill rivers can no longer score 100.
  • Generation progress weights phases by measured wall time. Naming now receives its measured share instead of one percent, preventing a stalled bar and stretching estimate while names are produced.
  • The manual records measured Full-build timing and memory: about seven minutes on a fast Apple Silicon Mac and up to about twenty-one minutes on a comparable Windows machine for the documented configuration.
  • Static scripts, styles and fonts carry validators, so warm reloads receive 304 responses instead of transferring about 7 MB again. External dashboard scripts are deferred while preserving their execution order.
  • Inter, Newsreader and Cinzel now ship as WOFF2 at less than half their previous total size, with the original TrueType files retained as fallback and covered by packaging checks.

Licence and installer contents

  • CartoVox now ships under its End User License Agreement instead of the MIT Licence. The first launch after updating shows the agreement and requires an unchecked affirmative acceptance before Unlock. The accepted EULA version is recorded with the beta key, and changed terms trigger a new prompt.
  • The EULA and third-party notices stay readable offline under App settings → Updates & support → Licence. Worlds, maps, atlases, lore and manuscripts created with Atlas remain the author's and may be published or sold without royalty; the application itself remains subject to its licence.
  • Every installer carries the EULA and third-party notices. Windows shows the agreement before copying files, macOS places both documents beside the application in the disk image, and Linux installs its copyright and licence record under /usr/share/doc/atlas-studio/.
  • Frozen-build verification now checks the legal documents, PDF runtime, font assets, build provenance and packaged coastline detection. Release dependencies include an exact reviewed pypdf pin for the CPython 3.12 builders.

Documentation and engineering

  • The README is a focused product front door, with installation, simulation, output, atlas, settings, licensing and known-limit details moved into a linked reference manual.
  • A file-referenced competitive polish audit and sequenced remediation plan document the remaining distribution, accessibility, performance, scientific and legal work instead of hiding it from release review.

CartoVox 0.8.1

Build, draw, explore and write inside one world

Version 0.8.1 brings together every CartoVox change implemented after 0.8.0. It expands mapmaking and writing tools, adds new ways to explore and revise a saved world, and improves generation, scientific validation and desktop reliability.

Geological survey map

  • Terrain & geology adds a Geological survey view with muted bedrock colors, unit contact lines, letter codes, and independently filterable saved tectonic boundaries. It supports the existing projection, drawing-density, inspector, and PNG download controls.
  • The reading key explains the eight broad parent-material provinces and distinguishes modelled tectonic traces from surveyed faults or dated formations. Existing worlds with saved bedrock data work immediately; structural traces are omitted when tectonic data is absent.

Render Studio: recipes, layers and appearance

  • Render Studio adds eight map recipes: Physical atlas, Pastel kingdoms, Banded heightmap, Biome atlas, Antique parchment, Survey blueprint, Print outline and Pure landmass. Save named recipes on this device or share them as Atlas recipe JSON files.
  • Reorder composition layers and adjust their opacity, color, line width and size. Labels, compass and scale text support adjustable halos. New export layers add realm colors, land-elevation contours, settlement symbols, a compass rose, an equatorial scale bar and vignette.
  • Choose ocean depth bands, contour and coordinate spacing, settlement density, scale units, and grayscale or sepia output. Pastel fantasy, Old paper and Blueprint are also available as shared Map Library palettes. These controls change presentation without re-simulating the saved world.
  • Transparent composition exports now retain alpha, and overlapping translucent layers composite correctly. Render manifests retain the selected appearance and resolved palette for reproducibility. Atlas recipe files do not import Azgaar .map worlds or Azgaar style JSON.
  • Creating another Render Studio bundle now keeps every composition as a separate saved render, including repeated renders at the same style and resolution. Existing bundles remain viewable and downloadable.
  • Concurrent editing-background and composition previews return independent images instead of sharing a preview file.
  • Named recipes and each world's last composition keep every embedded stamp once, shared by content, within a stated browser-storage budget. Older last-compositions are dropped first when the budget is exceeded, and a save that cannot fit is refused with the reason instead of failing silently. A layer color override on Stamps and shapes now says that it flattens imported art into silhouettes.

Render Studio: illustrated terrain art

  • A new Illustrated realm recipe paints the saved world like a storybook map: watercolour land cover with dark forest floors, olive uplands, snow above each biome's snowline, wet banks and a luminous shoreline; original hand-drawn mountain and hill glyphs placed by saved relief with snow caps, ink creases and hatching; conifer, broadleaf and tropical tree stamps placed by saved canopy and biome; and soft mist over the highest ground. Terrain, canopy and biomes are read, never changed.
  • Volcanoes with glowing craters, lava streaks and smoke plumes stand on saved arc and subduction seams, hotspot provinces and the Firelands and Ashlands; dead trees stand on ash, blight, dry country and the treeline; reed tufts fill open wetlands. Ice caps and sea ice crack into floes, salt pans crack, deserts ripple with dunes, grasslands streak, reef shallows show pale turquoise and volcanic ground is dusted with ash.
  • Painted land cover, Mountains, hills and volcanoes, Forests and Mountain mist are separate export layers that can be added to any composition and reordered like the others. Mountain and forest layers have Size and Density style controls, saved with recipes.
  • The new Illustrated palette pairs sapphire deeps with luminous cyan shallows and gives Render Studio lakes and rivers the same cyan; it is also available in Map colors. Decorative detail now grains the ocean as well as the land.
  • Glyphs are placed at sheet fractions from the world's own seed, so a 1K preview carries the same forests and ranges as the 16K export and every tile agrees with its neighbours. Sea ice is painted where the saved annual ice cover is dense.

Render Studio: titles, captions and place labels

  • Add positioned map titles and captions in Render Studio. Edit text, size and percentage positions, or click a preview to place a caption, compass or scale bar. Captions are included in saved recipes and render manifests.
  • Choose serif, italic or display lettering and circle, square, diamond, triangle or star markers. Add saved roads, sea lanes and landmark symbols as separate export layers, with missing-data warnings. Line coordinates are quantized before tiling to prevent join shifts.
  • Captions can now rotate, curve upward or downward, use individual typefaces and letter spacing, or follow a copied drawing path. Reverse, reposition or detach the copied path without changing its source artwork. Caption edits have session undo/redo, and render plans report when lettering shrinks to fit a path.
  • Render bundles include captions.svg with editable caption lettering alongside the PNG layer. Caption shapes and paths survive recipe export, import and reload. The SVG references font names; PNG layers preserve the exact rendered appearance.
  • Render Studio now supports individual place-label editing: search saved names, change display text, choose typography and size, hide a name, or position its text using percentages or a preview click. Reset restores automatic lettering. Edits travel with recipes and render manifests without changing settlement positions or canonical names, and mismatched world/place identities are reported and ignored.

Render Studio: stamps, drawings, artwork and scenes

  • Render Studio adds an interactive Stamps and shapes canvas with twelve original vector symbols. Place and drag artwork, adjust rotation, size, stretch, colors and opacity, then duplicate, hide, lock or reorder objects. Undo/redo covers the last 40 object edits.
  • Saved recipes now preserve up to 200 decoration objects. Render bundles include an editable objects.svg decoration layer as well as the composited PNG layer. This artwork does not modify simulated terrain or settlement data.
  • Import custom PNG/JPEG/WebP stamps into Render Studio, organize them by name, pack and tags, and share Atlas art packs. Recipes embed the bounded PNG assets so artwork survives moving between computers.
  • Draw freeform paths, polygons and brush strokes; edit points, apply solid/dashed/dotted lines, texture artwork and add configurable shadows. Multi-selection supports flat groups, shared dragging, duplication, stacking, scale and rotation, with snapping and canvas zoom.
  • Draw smooth Bézier paths and polygons, or smooth an existing drawing. Edit anchors and independent curve handles, split segments without changing their shape, remove anchors, or straighten a drawing, with undo/redo and lock protection.
  • Curved artwork retains textures, masks, shadows, transforms and line styles. Recipes preserve handles, objects.svg exports native cubic paths, and tiled PNG rendering preserves joins. Captions can follow a sampled copy of the curve.
  • Paint soft colored strokes and round dabs in Render Studio. Artwork supports soft edges and Normal, Multiply or Screen blending, including imported stamps and textured drawings.
  • Erase earlier artwork with editable eraser objects, or paint erase/restore masks on a selected stamp. Masks follow transforms and preserve source transparency. Clear, undo, duplicate, hide or reorder edits without changing the underlying map.
  • Painting effects persist in compositions, recipes, render manifests and editable objects.svg. PNG masks preserve tiled joins; SVG feathering uses vector bands. Blending and erasing stay within the Stamps and shapes layer.
  • The decoration canvas works from the keyboard: arrow keys nudge the selection (Shift for larger steps), Delete removes it, Enter finishes a drawing, Backspace drops its last point and Escape cancels a drawing or mask stroke.
  • Create editable keep-interior, woodland-encounter and village-square layouts on scene paper. Choose square/hex encounter grids, colors, spacing and author units. An independent grid layer stays visible above filled floors. Scene output preserves its drawing scale and omits geographic world files.

Map colors and dock

  • A compact map dock groups appearance settings under View and secondary actions under Tools. The reading key, hover reading and coordinates stack without covering each other; narrow screens place the dock below the map.
  • An open View or Tools menu rises above the map library and other right-edge panels, so its controls can be read and clicked while a panel is open.
  • Physical relief now opens with a Natural palette: sage lowlands, sandstone uplands and deep teal water, with softer coastlines, light from two directions and subtle terrain-derived texture.
  • Choose Natural, Verdant, Parchment, Dusk, Tropical, Ember, Aurora or Classic from View → Map colors. The choice stays with each world, and live map class swatches and continuous scales follow the selected colors without changing scientific values or classifications.
  • Three vibrant palettes add saturated terrain and water: Tropical brings emerald and turquoise, Ember pairs golden and copper land with sapphire seas, and Aurora combines jade lowlands, violet ridges and electric blue water. Their class colors and continuous scales also use richer saturation.
  • World cards, relief redraws, globe textures, projection PNG exports and new Render Studio compositions use the saved appearance. Existing illustrated styles and archived generation products keep their own drawing styles.
  • Existing worlds with saved numerical fields can use the new appearance immediately; no re-simulation is needed.

Ocean currents and sea-surface temperatures

  • Fix an unstable circulation solve that amplified grid noise into tangled arrows, spurious small gyres and weak apparent wind response. Numerical relaxation and drift scaling are now internal solver constants; the two old settings are removed and reported as unused when loading older configurations.
  • Balance the basin-circulation and direct wind-drift terms so gyres retain their return flow and unobstructed circumpolar channels carry wind-driven currents. Currents represent the annual wind response.
  • Keep SST transport and mixing over water, preserve the reference climate when currents are absent, and stop stretching tiny temperature residuals into multi-degree anomalies. The final current-induced anomaly retains a zero ocean mean at each latitude.
  • Current streamlines now account for longitude spacing with latitude and stop at land.
  • Full-world calibration now measures ocean temperature, current speed, adjacent opposing currents, SST anomaly magnitude and zonal bias alongside the existing climate and biome metrics.
  • Existing worlds need regeneration or re-simulation to update their saved currents, temperatures and dependent climate fields. Re-rendering a saved map alone only updates arrow presentation.

Weather Year and journey weather

  • Weather Year turns the saved seasonal climate into an animated year with selectable frame counts. A radar view follows precipitation and seeded storm systems while preserving the world's solved seasons.
  • Adjust storm frequency, intensity and variability with a reproducible seed. Save the result as a named weather sheet that the Weather and Travel panels can share without changing the simulation.
  • Route weather now follows a journey from its selected departure day through its wind-adjusted arrival. Saved campaign journeys retain their forecast and timing, and changing the Weather Year frame count keeps the active seed and storm controls.

3D terrain explorer

  • Open a completed world and choose 3D terrain in the World map toolbar. Choose a smooth rectangular landscape, a spherical relief planet, or a refined voxel model.
  • Natural terrain colors, continuous slopes, coastal water depth, soft shadows, adjustable sun direction and surface finish make the terrain easier to read. Planets have an optional atmospheric rim. Voxels have fine 100 m terraces, relief smoothing and subtle optional block edges.
  • Orbit either hemisphere, pan landscapes, zoom, and switch perspective, orthographic, top/north-pole or low-angle cameras. Inspect terrain for coordinates, elevation, biome, climate and water readings using mouse, keyboard or touch.
  • Explore selected regions at four spans, including across the date line. Planet selections open as regional landscapes; returning to planet loads the whole globe. Landscapes, planets and voxels all offer 384, 512, 768, 1,024, 1,536 and 2,048 detail presets, and switching views preserves the selected detail. Indexed voxel faces and compact normals and colors halve large voxel buffer memory. The default stays at 256. Loaded dimensions and native-resolution limits appear beside the detail control, and a 2.1 million sample cap bounds large views.
  • Keep biome, elevation, realm and climate colors alongside natural terrain. Adjust vertical relief, smoothing, seafloor relief, water opacity, rivers and lakes. Save any camera view as a PNG. Land above sea level is never drawn below the water surface, so low coasts read as low ground rather than seabed.
  • Terrain samples arrive as one packed binary body instead of JSON text: the largest sample is about 40 MB rather than 149 MB, and the server no longer spends seconds serialising it. The detail control states the approximate memory each preset needs.
  • Rendering is local and read-only. A background worker builds the meshes and keeps the loaded sample between builds, so relief and smoothing changes no longer copy the whole sample again; closing the viewer releases scene resources and cancels pending work. Reload recovers graphics context loss. Display detail cannot exceed the saved simulation resolution, and lower detail can omit small features. Requires WebGL and current saved terrain fields.

Map measurement

  • Finish path locks a route at its current points, so two or more points can be measured without closing a shape. Enter also finishes; Undo reopens the route.
  • Every leg shows its distance on the map beside the route.
  • The reading key and hover reading step aside while measuring, so the measurement readout no longer overlaps them.

Manuscript writing desk

  • Design a complete cover with any saved map, plate or city plan, a custom title, author, subtitle, colors, image fit, shading and text position. Read fits the whole cover on entry, including smaller screens. Edit cover returns directly to its settings.
  • Choose a book cover or its map to represent the world in Library cards and the world-switcher menu; the default relief remains available.
  • Place individual paragraphs left, center, right or justified, indent blocks and insert explicit page breaks. These choices survive Markdown editing, reader layout and Word export.
  • Insert maps with a caption, width and alignment; edit the caption directly from the map. Add web/email links or vault links with separate visible text and destination fields.
  • Customize header and footer text, placement and the first chapter page number. The reader previews the furniture; PDF and Word assign page numbers and leave the cover unnumbered. Word exports embed maps at page resolution (no larger than 2,400 pixels on their long side), retain captions and keep web links clickable.
  • Plan chapters beside the prose with a synopsis, point of view, setting, labels, private notes, word targets and a named-scene navigator. Chapter cards show status, progress and labels; an icon-only rail control hides the outline.
  • Search prose and planning notes across the whole book, replace exact text in the open chapter, duplicate a chapter and track words added in the current session.
  • Import a PDF, docx, RTF, OPML, Markdown or plain-text book directly into the current manuscript. Atlas creates the book when needed, detects common chapter, prologue, epilogue and heading boundaries, creates the ordered chapters together and preserves the original upload for recovery.
  • Open Style from the manuscript toolbar to change editor zoom, text width and typography, or choose the page size, margins, running furniture and chapter numbering used by Read and Word export.
  • Chapter changes and exports wait for the latest writing to save. Failed prose or planning saves keep the chapter open; newer browser drafts survive an earlier save completing.
  • Read the whole book as continuous chapters and print through the browser's page layout, so long paragraphs flow across pages. Page size, margins, chapter numbering and typography remain available; supported browsers print the selected running headers and page numbers. Word export now honors font, line spacing and chapter-header choices.
  • Manuscript imports keep the original upload and one editable chapter set. Existing Codex articles remain untouched, and ambiguous title-cased lines stay in the prose.
  • Checks focus on broken links and unavailable map references, with word-target progress alongside them; new characters and ordinary capitalized words are no longer flagged as unknown names.
  • Restore books and chapters from the manuscript Trash panel. Atlas keeps the prose, planning card, order and chapter history together and never empties manuscript trash automatically.
  • Search world pages beside the text, read them without leaving the draft and insert a selected page as a portable [[wiki link]] at the caret.

Writer's gazetteer

  • Search every named settlement, realm, culture, tongue, continent, natural region, mountain range, desert, biome, river, lake, sea and place of power in a saved world.
  • Open a dossier that gathers location, nature, seasons, people, routes, name roots and story material, while distinguishing measured, generated, canonical and suggested details. Gazetteer reading is local and read-only.
  • Open the same dossiers from the Manuscript World panel, Codex wiki links and named features in the cell inspector. Insert a link into the draft, pin a dossier to private notes, copy it, locate it on the map or begin writing with it.

Import questions, world placement and reseeding

  • Imported and traced maps now ask only the questions that the image cannot answer before generation. The neutral choices preserve the detected map; optional answers steer relief, peaks, terrain character, sea depth, wetness, warmth and other applicable world settings.
  • Resize an imported or traced map to 5–90% of the world's width, preview planetary land coverage, and choose generated surroundings or ocean only. Drawing annotations follow the resized source.
  • Reseed a completed world beside its source with a new seed and choose Everything, World or Story scope. Imported and drawn foundations carry forward when they can be reproduced, lineage is recorded, and Atlas explains when sculpt, feature or deep-time edits cannot be preserved safely.

Coastline detection and assisted tracing

  • Import and Draw now share the same coastline reader. Fixed pale-blue oceans reading as all land, dark continents with lakes being mistaken for line drawings, sepia maps losing their land, and lake marks turning the outside ocean into land.
  • Paint land or water directly on either detection preview. Protect finished regions, undo corrections, and retain edits through another detection pass.
  • Import traces use the detailed working mask, with selectable smoothing, a minimum island area and a report of removed outlines. Large archipelagos can exceed the former 240-outline limit.
  • Magnetic tracing follows nearby image edges between anchors in the import editor and Draw's Outline tool. Manual tracing remains available.
  • Auto-detected mask polarity is retained when a confirmed import is prepared for generation.
  • The coastline review keeps confirmation and Generate world in a visible action bar above the optional questions, with a separate route to change generation settings.
  • Coastline-only drawings generate terrain relief by default, with a separate Keep my elevations option. Regional world completion now matches terrain across an exterior transition instead of making a hard rectangular join.
  • Resize an imported or traced map to 5–90% of the world's width, preview its planetary land coverage, and choose generated surroundings or ocean only. Saved recipes retain these choices, and drawing annotations follow the resized map.

Automatic coastlines in Draw your world

  • Loading a reference image now previews detected land boundaries and islands. Apply the coastline as one undoable change, then continue sculpting and tracing.
  • Choose colour-map, line-drawing, light/dark-mask or transparency readings. Adjust cleanup and mark land or water to correct ambiguous map colours, labels and borders.
  • Detection runs locally, preserves existing elevations on detected land and supports archipelagos without the hand-drawn outline count limit. Very small features remain limited by image and canvas resolution.

Editable geography and safer canvas tools

  • Auto Trace converts a reference into editable coastline geometry. Select and refine trace points, and move saved mountain ranges, rivers and land-cover regions without rebuilding the drawing from scratch.
  • Selection, deletion, undo and redo now work consistently across tracing and drawing tools. Pan temporarily pauses an active draft, and destructive clear or delete actions require confirmation.

  • Browse previous and current release notes in App settings → Release notes, with a version selector and Older / Newer navigation.
  • Read bundled history offline. Check for newer notes to fetch future published releases from the release feed, and keep those notes available offline too.

Reliability and Windows generation follow-up

  • The desktop shell keeps its native window responsive while simulation and rendering run in the worker process. Startup recovery can reload the local Studio instead of leaving a stranded window.
  • Authoring saves wait for the newest draft, surface failures without discarding the open work, and keep completion links tied to the operation that created them. Saved render registration and repeated composition handling are also more reliable.
  • Story checks now retain their scope and provenance, scaled maps preserve river geography, active rivers are checked against the saved conditioned surface, and water and tide readings are reported only where they apply.
  • Re-simulation honors the saved story seed and painted climate strength. Reseeding carries the latest effective simulation settings and preserves imported foundations when their original image is missing. Worlds with sculpt or feature edits receive an explanation instead of silently losing those edits during reseeding.
  • Journey weather follows the actual wind-adjusted trip through arrival. Pending or failed weather requests cannot reuse an older departure's weather when saving a campaign journey. Routes longer than the 400-day planning window remain usable and explain why forecast detail is unavailable. Changing Weather Year's frame count preserves the current seed and storm controls.
  • Manuscript map/link removal confirmations remain reachable above the editing UI, cancellation restores the panel, and removing a link keeps its visible words with Undo support.
  • Right-click paste works in supported editors after a beta key is configured, and advanced settings can list the named Render Studio recipes saved in the browser.
  • Windows generation uses bounded NumPy buffer reuse inside the actual simulation/render worker, with matching local-build packaging and a reproducible Windows comparison tool. Solver settings are unchanged. On one tested Windows machine, Quick generation used 56% less time and Full generation with one world plate used 40% less time; compared arrays and rendered pixels matched. Full runs used the same memory-adjusted atlas quality in every mode.

Portable generation and saved-cell performance

  • Generation reuses identical hydrology topology, fixed climate forcing and style geometry while preserving simulation resolution, solver budgets, precision, seasonal calculations and all rendered styles. Naming retains the same alternatives and conflict scores while rejecting impossible matches earlier.
  • Cell inspection reuses small exact data tiles, with content checks before and after reading to detect edits even when timestamps are preserved. Cached tiles are bounded in memory; names and other report metadata remain freshly read.
  • A portable comparison mode measures previous/current generation with the same platform allocator and checks saved arrays and rendered pixels across seeds and repeated runs.
  • In the reviewed six-world macOS calibration, median build time fell from about 17 seconds to about 13 seconds and median peak memory fell from about 1,022 MB to about 704 MB against the 0.8.0 baseline. Canonical output and scientific metrics remained within their reviewed bounds.

Engineering and release verification

  • Shared saved-world fixtures, provenance helpers and build reporters replace duplicate test and release code. Obsolete redesign prototypes and superseded helpers have been removed while behavioral coverage remains in place.

CartoVox 0.8.0

Worlds you can shape, name and show as you mean them

CartoVox 0.8.0 is the professionalization release: a broad pass over creation, the World workspace, maps, authoring, science reporting, import and export, accessibility and reliability, followed by four days of new capability an author asked for.

Draw and import a whole world

  • The blank canvas now takes kingdoms, cities, land cover, roads, landmarks and a reference image, on a full-screen desk with an icon rail.
  • Illustrated maps are read as their authors meant them: a hypsometric reading of painted colour, coherent land classes and surface drainage that no longer drowns or speckles a map.
  • Importing asks whether the map is the whole planet or one region of it, with a width and centre-latitude to place it.

Maps shown un-stretched

  • Every world is presented in Equal Earth by default, with Robinson, Mollweide or the stretched grid a click away; data maps, styles, dynamic sheets and the illustrated world plate follow, and every overlay, hover reading and measurement lands on the same spot.

Rivers, deserts and the brief

  • Rivers follow a continuous course: smooth through the routed cells, wandering where the physics allows, arriving at their trunk on the tangent.
  • "Lush" now means few deserts: it weakens subtropical subsidence and strengthens inland moisture recycling instead of only raising rainfall. "Fewer deserts" in a thesis and "Avoid: deserts" reach the same lever, and county-sized desert specks fold into the steppe around them.

Tongues

  • Define a language by blending real-language flavours (French, Russian, Latin, Old English, Spanish, Cherokee, Greek, Old Norse, Arabic, Japanese), add words you like, hear names before the world exists, and give the tongue to a realm so its rivers, cities and kingdoms speak it.
  • The Nations panel now says that it is where an author's empires go; the setup guide and command palette lead there.

Polish

  • Custom theme swatches are controls with a picker; the map HUD fits two rows; atlas plate cards select as a whole; the finished-generation dock stays dismissed; a new mark opens the Library desk and watermarks empty workspaces.

Compatibility

  • Windows builds use native peak-memory diagnostics and byte-stable build provenance, fixing test collection and frozen SBOM verification on Windows.
  • Atlas is pre-1.0. This release changes the default presentation of every existing world and re-keys the plate cache; no migration shims are kept. Regenerate a world to pick up model changes.

Reliable setup guidance and clearer candidate actions

CartoVox 0.7.2 is a small interface-focused follow-up to 0.7.1. It makes the optional Create setup guide reliable in the desktop app and gives the action that commits a candidate world the visual importance its cost deserves. World generation, saved projects and simulation results are unchanged.

Setup guide opens reliably

  • The Setup guide button now keeps both of the interface's hiding mechanisms in sync, preventing a timing-dependent state where the button reported that the guide was expanded while the desktop app still kept it invisible.
  • One click now opens the actual five-step guide. Authors no longer have to discover and click a second Show guide control after summoning it.
  • Closing and reopening the guide consistently restores the full setup sequence, while the guide's own control can still collapse it when preferred.

Candidate actions are easier to understand

  • Preview, Compare and More now share one compact row on every candidate card.
  • Create Quick world, Create full-resolution world or Generate publication atlas occupies a full-width second row according to the active generation settings.
  • The creation action now uses the same gold primary treatment as Preview, making it clear that this is the consequential action that commits the selected candidate.
  • The two-row hierarchy remains intact at compact card widths.

Compatibility and distribution

CartoVox 0.7.1

Deeper world editing, stronger imports, and safer iteration

CartoVox 0.7.1 is a focused follow-up to 0.7.0. It expands terrain and feature editing into a practical world-revision workflow, makes external maps easier to interpret before spending simulation time, adds imperial display units, and recovers more safely from interrupted generation. Existing projects remain readable and are never silently rebuilt.

Sculpt the world with clearer intent

  • Sculpt now previews the likely terrain result directly on the map, with clearer tools, footprints, strength and shape controls before anything is applied.
  • Island building supports finer shapes instead of a single blunt circular uplift. Coast, peak, ridge, plateau, basin, strait, river-valley, flatten, smooth and detail tools provide complementary ways to build and refine terrain.
  • Select feature reads the editable terrain, water, ecology, settlement, route, realm and magical-region features beneath a point. Clicking the selected feature again now reliably deselects it, including while an earlier lookup is still completing.
  • Applied changes create restorable revisions. The interface explains which downstream systems will be rebuilt before re-simulation.

Remove and reshape generated features

  • Land, islands, lakes, rivers, biome regions and mountain terrain can be removed or reshaped through feature-aware operations rather than imprecise map guessing.
  • Settlements can be removed or relocated while preserving the distinction between authored intent and generated downstream consequences.
  • Routes and realm boundaries can be reshaped with feature-specific controls.
  • Magical regions can be selected and edited alongside physical and political features.
  • Operations that cannot honestly preserve a generated feature explain the constraint and stage the closest supported world change instead of pretending to edit disconnected pixels.

Deep Time is easier to author

  • The initial subcontinent drawing workspace is larger and opens directly when its custom-drawing card is chosen.
  • Authors can change brush width, draw a closed outline and fill the enclosed continent with one action.
  • The drawing workspace has explicit back and close actions, so opening it never traps the author in an unwanted step.
  • Clearer guidance and previews make early continental composition easier to understand before committing it to the simulation.

Better external-map import

  • The import workshop now distinguishes heightfields, land-and-water masks and coloured illustrated maps more carefully.
  • A preview stage shows the interpreted land mask and coastline before generation begins, with controls for inversion, cleanup and interpretation.
  • Colour-map handling is more tolerant of labels, borders, decorative water, shaded land and other cartographic detail that previously confused simple colour thresholds.
  • Guidance states what geography can be preserved and which terrain, climate, rivers, biomes, settlements and lore Atlas must regenerate.

Safer generation and familiar units

  • Metric and imperial display units are available across world summaries, map inspection and relevant measurements without changing the saved simulation.
  • Interrupted or force-closed generation records are detected and can be recovered or removed instead of leaving an undeletable project card.
  • Temporary seed previews are kept separate from committed worlds, and failed preview imagery no longer requires deleting all application data to recover the workspace.
  • Generation cleanup preserves completed world data and avoids treating an abandoned in-progress record as a valid finished project.

Compatibility and distribution

  • Existing 0.7.0 and older projects remain readable. Feature edits and full re-simulation are deliberate actions that create revisions; opening a world does not rewrite it.
  • Terrain edits can change downstream climate, rivers, biomes, settlements, routes, names, lore and maps. Atlas states that scope before applying them.
  • External-map interpretation is still an inference from pixels. Always inspect the preview and correct the land mask before committing a long simulation.

CartoVox 0.7.0

A map-first World workspace, deeper scientific maps, flexible atlas lettering, and honest quality upgrades

CartoVox 0.7.0 makes the generated world itself the centre of the workspace. It adds new climate, geology, water, land and civilisation views; turns natural regions into connected Lands pages; and gives authors clearer choices about atlas labels, drawing quality and simulation quality. Create and Render Studio now explain their consequences where the decision is made. Existing projects remain readable and are never silently re-simulated.

The map is now the World workspace

  • World opens around the map rather than treating it as one panel among many. The contextual toolbar keeps Sculpt, Render and the Map Library close to the geography they affect.
  • The Map Library can be shown or hidden from that toolbar. The choice is remembered, while the generic panel-collapse behaviour remains available elsewhere.
  • World tools behave as modes: an author-opened workbench comes to the front, the right edge presents one active panel, and the inspector has a stable place rather than competing with unrelated controls.
  • The globe has its own corner and can be hidden independently. Its spin control is explicitly labelled, and map, globe, dock and bottom-band controls remain reachable in CartoVox Dark and Parchment Light.
  • Project findings use readable titles and measured supporting text instead of presenting every result with the same visual urgency.
  • Data-map keys, map controls and the selected view stay legible over the map at desktop and compact widths.

More of the simulated world is visible

  • Natural regions groups contiguous landscapes by landform and climate character. Selecting one opens a measured Lands entry with terrain, climate, water, neighbouring regions and connected lore.
  • Lands is connected across the map, search and Codex rather than living as a detached regional key. The generated gazetteer can also be exported into the Codex vault.
  • Domestication & farming shows wild-crop package strength, actual agricultural cradles and their historical reach. Whether domestication may shape civilisation hearths remains an explicit author choice.
  • Köppen climate classification derives conventional climate codes from the world's saved temperatures and seasonal rainfall.
  • Sea ice & winter extent separates the persistent ice cap from the potential cold-season fringe and explains the limits of that model.
  • Groundwater & aquifers delineates water-bearing bodies, recharge status, saturated thickness and accessibility, including aquifers that can support settlement beneath arid ground.
  • Soil properties lets authors switch among fertility, profile depth, free drainage, rockiness and organic carbon without replacing the categorical soil map.
  • Crust age & igneous provinces exposes the age of surface crust alongside the footprints of major flood-basalt events.
  • Every generated data view has a readable key. New maps remain honestly unavailable when an older project does not contain their required saved fields.

Connected evidence and safer author workflows

  • Map, inspector, search, Lands, Codex and scientific-export routes now cover substantially more of the numerical fields Atlas saves. Generated sidecars and GIS exports carry the corresponding evidence instead of leaving useful simulation state stranded on disk.
  • Late or optional capabilities are routed through the workflows where an author would look for them. A missing capability stays visibly unavailable rather than becoming a link to an empty surface.
  • Author canon, locked names, revisions, brief choices and other authored state are protected while switching workflows, rebuilding derived output or returning to Create.
  • Lands pages and exported gazetteer records keep stable connections to the map and related Codex material.

Labeled and no-label illustrated atlases

  • Create now offers Atlas lettering choices for Labeled only, No labels, or Both versions. The same default is available in App settings.
  • The choice applies to world, continent and regional illustrated sheets. A no-label atlas changes only the rendered plate pixels; Atlas still generates names, settlements, lore and searchable features for the world.
  • A saved world that creates its illustrated atlas later receives the same lettering options, rather than being forced into a single output style.
  • Missing no-label or labeled companions can be drawn later from the saved atlas source without re-running terrain, climate, rivers, settlements, names or lore.
  • Labeled sheets can be redrawn from current canon after lore or name edits.
  • The Map Library groups labeled and no-label versions beneath one authored sheet name. Small Labeled and No labels controls switch the visible variant instead of filling the library with duplicate titles.
  • Deferred rendering, pause-after-current-plate and resume understand the selected variants and preserve completed sheets.

A clear path from a Quick world to finished output

  • A Quick world now offers Best-quality drawings. Eligible maps are rebuilt at 4x drawing density from the exact saved simulation, so the geography, names and lore do not change.
  • Authors who want more simulated detail can instead choose Rebuild at full simulation resolution. Atlas creates a separate project from the same seed and saved recipe, runs the complete simulation and rebuilds the Map Library.
  • The Quick source project is left untouched. The confirmation explains that the broader geography should remain familiar while exact coastlines, rivers, climate boundaries, settlements, names and generated lore may change on the finer grid.
  • Best-quality drawing mode is remembered and used when eligible maps are opened; it does not pretend that extra drawing pixels are extra simulated cells.

Render Studio says what it creates

  • Render Studio identifies itself as a whole-world layered export and now states its scope before rendering.
  • One render creates one viewable whole-world composition at the chosen pixel size plus separate editable PNG layers for the checked ingredients.
  • It does not render every Map Library map, follow whichever library view is selected, overwrite those maps, re-run the world or add simulation detail below a saved cell.
  • Ocean, land, biomes, relief, lakes, rivers, coastline, borders, graticule and labels are compositing ingredients for that one custom sheet. Selecting Biomes therefore adds a biome layer to the composition; it does not create a high-resolution copy of the standalone Biomes library map.
  • The plan explains whether the chosen size writes single images or tiled layers, and keeps render pixels beside saved simulation dimensions.

Map filters survive sharper drawing

  • Filterable data maps preserve the selected classes, property variant and visible overlays when switching among Original, 2x, 3x and 4x drawing density.
  • Rivers, lakes and graticule controls now describe the visible high-density result instead of accidentally exposing an unrelated original PNG underneath.
  • Visible classes can be collapsed and expanded at the author's preference. The choice is remembered locally, while the selected-class count remains visible.
  • Continuous fields, categorical classes and boundary overlays retain their appropriate resampling rules at every supported density.

Create puts the answer beside the ask

  • Create collects planet type, geography, brief and detailed constraints on the authoring edge while leaving the main canvas for candidate results and comparison.
  • Recipe, seed, Quick mode, atlas finish, lettering and sheet selection remain close to the generation actions without consuming permanent rows of the workspace.
  • The optional setup guide is summoned when needed instead of reserving a standing band on every visit.
  • Generation preflight asks whether the selected output fits the current disk, reports the estimated range and available space, and reserves a safety margin before a long run begins.
  • Run advice is announced where generation starts and remains readable long enough to understand without turning the cost strip into another permanent panel.

Compatibility and practical limits

  • Existing projects open unchanged. No migration silently re-simulates a world or rewrites authored canon.
  • Older worlds can use newly derived views only when the required saved numerical fields exist. Atlas reports missing prerequisites rather than fabricating a map.
  • No-label atlas output removes lettering from illustrated sheets; it is not a switch that disables world naming or lore generation.
  • 2x–4x map density and 1K–16K Render Studio output improve the drawing. Only the explicit full-simulation rebuild adds simulated cells, and it does so in a separate project because downstream details can change.
  • Full generation and publication atlases remain demanding. Quick generation, candidate previews, selective sheets, Draft finish, deferred rendering and stop-after-current-plate remain the practical iteration tools.

CartoVox 0.6.1

App settings, saved recipes, accessibility controls, and world provenance

CartoVox gains a global App settings surface, a Parchment Light theme, accessibility controls, and saved recipes for combinations you tune in Advanced Settings. The World tab also gains a record of what each world was built with, and says plainly whether its illustrated atlas can still be created. Existing worlds open unchanged and no migration runs.

App settings

  • A gear beside Help & learn, or Ctrl/Cmd + comma, opens a global settings dialog. It is not a fifth author destination: the dashboard stays mounted underneath and is handed back untouched on close.
  • Six sections: Appearance, Accessibility, Workspace & layout, Creation defaults, Data & privacy, and Updates & support.
  • Changes apply immediately. There is no Save button, because a Save button can disagree with what is already on the screen.
  • Every setting is local to this browser or this installed copy. There is no account and no synchronisation; nothing about your preferences is sent anywhere.

A second theme

  • Parchment Light joins CartoVox Dark: warm paper rather than a white inversion, with the accent darkened so it reads on paper and warm, shallow shadows in place of black ones.
  • Follow system resolves to either theme and re-resolves live when the operating system changes. The choice is stored, not the resolved value, so following the system keeps following it.
  • Every text colour in both themes meets WCAG AA against every surface it can appear on. This is computed by the test suite rather than recorded as a remembered number.
  • The one deliberate change to CartoVox Dark's appearance is its error colour, which measured 4.13:1 against the lightest surface and now measures 5.25:1. Nothing else about CartoVox Dark moved; a computed-style comparison across 42 elements found that single difference.

Accessibility

  • Text size at 100%, 110% or 125%, driven by a single root scale. Dashboard type is now expressed relative to that scale, so a reader who has already enlarged their browser font is no longer overridden by fixed pixel sizes.
  • Comfortable and Compact interface density, which move chrome spacing and control height and never map detail. Touch targets stay at least 44 by 44 on phone layouts.
  • Reduced motion, honoured by the interface rather than merely stored. A system request for reduced motion always wins, whatever is chosen here.
  • The dialog is a proper modal: focus moves in, stays inside, and returns to the control that opened it. Every control has a visible label and a real form input behind it, so selection is never signalled by colour alone.

Workspace, layout and creation defaults

  • Choose where Atlas opens: the Library, Create, or the destination you were last using.
  • Choose whether Atlas remembers the section you had open in each destination. Turning it off ignores what was saved rather than erasing it, so turning it back on restores your sections.
  • Open or reset the Layout customiser from settings. The Layout drawer remains the fast route and is unchanged; existing hidden-region choices survive this release untouched.
  • Hiding the top bar hides the settings button with it, so the fixed Layout handle now also offers a way back to App settings.
  • The generation defaults from Create appear here too, editing the same record rather than a copy. Changing either surface updates the other. They are labelled as defaults for new generation runs and never alter a world you have already built.

Saved recipes and safer iteration

  • Save the current Advanced Settings sheet as a named recipe: the built-in preset plus only the settings you changed. Recipes appear under Your recipes in the World shape picker and can be exported or imported as bounded, validated JSON.
  • The World tab's build record now offers Build another like this. It loads the world's recipe into Create without copying the seed, so the next run follows the same choices without recreating the same world.
  • Atlas preserves the settings used by a run before generation begins, including failed or cancelled runs. The completion panel offers Adjust these settings as a direct route back to the sheet.
  • Draft settings and the selected recipe survive a reload or desktop restart. The Advanced settings button shows the number of active overrides so restored choices are never invisible.
  • Switching presets, loading another recipe, or clearing overrides now asks before discarding unsaved changes and states how many settings would be lost. Deleting a recipe leaves its current values on the sheet.
  • Recipes are authored work rather than app preferences, so Reset all app settings does not remove them. Up to 24 named recipes can be stored locally; export is the way to move one between installations.

Workflow and interface fixes

  • Create now gives the World Brief and candidate grid a usable minimum height and lets the page scroll on shorter displays instead of crushing the brief into a small internal viewport.
  • The Advanced Settings sheet stays intact across reloads and generation runs, and the completion panel provides a clear way back to the settings that produced the run.
  • Map inspectors and lab panels keep a readable dark-on-map palette under Parchment Light. Missing colour, background and shadow tokens were replaced with defined semantic tokens and are now guarded by tests.
  • The map-resolution notice now lives in the Render Studio bar instead of permanently covering the map. It returns to the map only while that map is fullscreen.

Custom themes

  • Create, duplicate, rename, apply, export and import themes. A theme is a small JSON file of named colours.
  • A theme cannot add styles, fonts, images, links or scripts, cannot reach the file system, and cannot change a world, a map or anything you export. Every value must be a hex colour and is applied as a single custom property, so anything that is not a colour is refused by the same rule.
  • Contrast is checked before a theme can be applied. A theme whose text cannot be read is refused, and the message names the pair and the ratio rather than saying "invalid".
  • Editing previews a draft; the dashboard keeps the theme you had until you apply. Importing a file previews it too — selecting a file never applies a theme.
  • Up to twelve themes, 64 KB per imported file. An imported id never overwrites a theme you already have, and an unreadable saved theme is dropped on load rather than applied.
  • Exporting carries the schema version, name, base and colours. No paths, no worlds, no other preferences, no tester identity.

How this world was built

  • The World tab gains a "How this world was built" disclosure: seed, preset, grid, whether the world came from an imported heightfield, a Tectonic Director intent or a saved geological history, and the settings that differ from the preset.
  • Worlds record all 336 resolved configuration fields, and almost none of them were chosen by anyone. The panel shows the short list an author is responsible for rather than the whole sheet.
  • Filesystem paths are deliberately not reported, and the grid is described as an observation rather than a recovered choice: the record stores the resolution a Quick run produced, not the fact that Quick was picked.

Creating the illustrated atlas later

  • A world built without the illustrated atlas can usually still grow one, drawn from its saved fields and plate framing without re-running terrain, climate, rivers, settlements, names or lore. That has been possible for some time; what it lacked was any sign of it from the World tab.
  • The panel now says which of three situations a world is in: plates already drawn, plates still possible with a pointer to Create publication atlas, or no saved atlas source and a re-simulation needed. Previously the last two were both silence.

Updates, support and privacy

  • Automatic update checking can be turned off. It gates only the once-a-day startup check; Check now keeps working, so declining unprompted network access does not remove your ability to ask.
  • Installed-app version, updates, folders, diagnostics and bug reporting now live in Updates & support rather than inside the Manual, which keeps a link to them. There is one support panel to fix rather than two that drift apart.
  • About reports the running version and build mode. In a browser tab that now comes from a small read-only endpoint, so the version is answerable outside the installed app for the first time.
  • Copy app info copies name, version, build mode and platform for a bug report, and never paths, keys, environment variables, world names or anything you have written.
  • Diagnostics bundles are assembled from build and system information plus redacted logs. App settings and custom themes are never read when one is built.

Themes do not change what Atlas produces

Maps, illustrated plates, vector and scientific exports, PNG products and project backups are drawn from the world, not the interface. No simulation or rendering code reads an appearance preference, and the settings surface makes exactly one network request, with no body.

This was measured. A generated world's 121 files were hashed, five theme switches and text-size and density changes were made with a map, its tools and its inspectors on screen, and the files were hashed again: byte-for-byte identical, with no network requests during the changes.

Compatibility

  • Existing worlds open unchanged. No migration runs and no saved world file is rewritten.
  • Existing Layout, collapsed-panel, remembered-section, generation and creation-guide preferences are all preserved.
  • CartoVox Dark remains the default, so an installation that never opens settings looks as it did apart from the error-colour correction described above.
  • Preferences remain local to one browser or installation, as they already were.

Known limitations

  • Display-cache usage reporting and cache clearing are not in this release. They need native file-system work whose failure mode is deleting real project data, and that belongs in its own change rather than alongside a settings shell.
  • There is no export or import of all preferences. Theme export exists; general portability is not promised until it is built and tested.
  • High-contrast theme variants are not included. Both built-in themes meet AA, but a dedicated high-contrast set is separate work.
  • Mobile layouts remain for review rather than authoring, as before.

CartoVox 0.6.0

a finished worldbuilding workspace with sharper maps, authored causes, visible sculpting, and calmer cartography

This is the largest CartoVox product-finishing release so far. It turns the simulation, atlas, lore, and author-control systems into a more coherent workspace: begin with a clear task, understand the cost before committing, inspect or direct important causes, see pending edits before re-simulation, and move between creating, mapping, writing, and managing worlds without fighting the interface. Existing projects remain readable, and author canon continues to survive deliberate re-simulation.

A calmer workspace built around real tasks

  • The dashboard now centers four primary destinations—Create, World, Write, and Library—while Map, Atlas, Travel, Campaign, Lore, and other tools appear in the context where they are useful.
  • Create is a true first screen. Authors choose whether to generate, import, or build through deep time, then choose what the world is for before detailed controls appear.
  • Primary actions now match the selected route. Quick exploration, candidate search, committed generation, deferred illustrated-atlas work, and publication-quality output are described as different costs and commitments instead of being presented as interchangeable buttons.
  • A task-based capability tour points directly to climate investigation, tectonic direction, map import, sculpting, travel, writing, campaigns, publication, and scientific export without burying those systems in equal-weight tabs.
  • Generation preflight estimates likely time, disk use, resolution, plate count, and expensive settings before a long run begins. The generation dock keeps progress and recovery actions visible after navigation or reload.
  • Compact and desktop layouts were exercised across all four primary workspaces. Collapsible rails, recovery controls, independent panel scrolling, and keyboard-operable tablists make dense tools more usable on smaller screens.
  • Floating labs and tool panels now keep pointer and wheel input for themselves, preventing the map underneath from panning, zooming, or selecting while the author interacts with a panel.

Calmer cartography and honest sharp viewing

  • Illustrated atlases now save both a named world plate and an unlabelled companion with identical geography and framing. Authors can use the clean plate for external artwork without losing the annotated reference.
  • Scale-aware label budgets protect major world, continent, realm, settlement, lake, and river names before allowing minor labels to compete for space. Dense sheets remain informative without treating every label as equally important.
  • Lake presentation suppresses visually noisy minor and seasonal marks on general relief plates while keeping the complete scientific lake classification available in data views and exports.
  • CartoVox now bundles its interface and atlas typography locally, so dashboard and packaged output do not depend on a network font service or platform-specific fallback.
  • The World map adds Auto, Original, 2x, 3x, and 4x drawing-density controls. Higher-density views materially reduce raster stair-stepping during zoom without pretending the physical simulation has gained cells.
  • An always-visible resolution notice distinguishes drawing pixels from the saved simulation grid and reports approximate simulation-cell scale. Continuous and categorical maps use appropriate scaling paths rather than one misleading resampler.
  • High-density maps are generated through a bounded local endpoint, cached per world, pruned under a fixed budget, excluded from project backups, and rebuilt after restore. If a larger drawing fails, Atlas keeps the valid original visible and explains the fallback.

Author intent is visible on the map

  • A spherical measurement tool reports great-circle distance using the saved planetary radius, including correct antimeridian and near-pole routes. Measurements are transient and never alter the world.
  • Tectonic Director now has an interactive coordinate map for placing plate seeds and shields and connecting requested margins. Preflight checks the draft before it becomes authoritative, and the finished-world audit distinguishes satisfied, compromised, and impossible requests.
  • Language-family intent can constrain naming before generation. Locked author choices flow through the stable naming registry, while neutral or omitted intent preserves procedural behavior.
  • Creation routes expose whether domestication should influence civilisation hearths instead of leaving that consequence hidden in configuration.
  • Terrain sculpting now previews the brush footprint, falloff, bearing, radius, cumulative elevation delta, affected area, raised and lowered cells, and provisional coast crossings before re-simulation.
  • Multiple sculpt operations remain visible and ordered through undo and redo. A failed apply retains the complete pending preview, and a successful apply clears it only after the simulation cascade and requested atlas work finish.

Lore, identity, and author canon

  • Generated facts, inferred connective material, author canon, unavailable data, and deliberate open questions now have distinct presentation states instead of appearing as accidental empty sections.
  • Author Questions are a first-class writing surface, giving intentionally unresolved parts of the world somewhere useful to live.
  • Realms, religions, early Chronicle material, political summaries, story hooks, and series-bible material use the active brief more consistently and avoid simulator-facing language in author output.
  • Culture names, demonyms, display names, filenames, maps, reports, and lore now share stronger uniqueness and stable-identity rules. Internal hearth identifiers no longer leak into author-facing prose.
  • Lore saves refresh the visible world revision immediately. Canon edits create recoverable revisions, rebuild the generated Codex, and remain intact through later terrain re-simulation.
  • The shared CartoVox identity, compass-globe artwork, interface typography, screenshots, and product guidance now match across the dashboard, desktop application, installers, and documentation.

Safer long-running generation and publication

It turns the simulation systems added through 0.4 into workflows an author can discover and control: choose how to begin, state what the world is for, inspect why the climate behaves as it does, constrain selected nations and tectonic causes, experiment with erosion, and export large layered artwork without confusing drawing resolution with simulation resolution. Existing worlds remain readable; tools that need saved scientific fields explain when an older project must be deliberately re-simulated.

A clearer route into Atlas

  • The Create workspace now begins with three genuinely different paths: generate a new world, import an existing map, or build through geological deep time.
  • A second purpose choice tunes the route for campaigning, climate study, an illustrated atlas, a base for external artwork, or writing and worldbuilding. These choices set ordinary visible options rather than hiding a new preset system.

Climate Lab and explainable weather

  • Selecting a map cell can now explain its temperature and rainfall departures using latitude, elevation, continentality, upwind terrain, moisture supply, and the saved circulation fields.
  • Climate Lab exposes seasonal temperature, pressure, wind, and rainfall frames; moisture-path inspection; located plausibility checks; and a local review bundle containing the seed, resolved configuration, model response, and findings.

Author-guided tectonics

  • Atlas can now accept a tectonic intent document that pins selected plate seeds, craton nuclei, drift bearings, and relative plate speeds before the solver runs.

  • Each world can derive a calendar from its own day length, orbital year, moon period, eccentricity, and periapsis. Synodic months, intercalation, weeks, unequal seasons, solstices, and equinoxes are calculated rather than copied from Earth.
  • Domestication now models wild founder crops, complementary crop packages, rare agricultural origin centres, and climate-limited spread. The survey is always produced; allowing it to relocate civilisation hearths is an explicit opt-in so old behaviour stays stable.
  • Physiographic regions are derived from connected terrain, relief, coasts, moisture, temperature, bedrock, and drainage, then named as natural regions rather than political territories.
  • Aquifer surveys estimate connected water-bearing bodies, water-table depth, saturated thickness, storage, recharge, renewable versus fossil groundwater, and whether groundwater can support dry-country settlement.
  • These systems are preserved in world reports and scientific arrays for inspection and external analysis.

Biome traits and safer extensions

  • Civilisation, travel, and settlement logic now ask what terrain does—forested, waterlogged, fevered, parched, aquatic, or impassably cold—instead of hard-coding one biome name list.
  • Terran/Koeppen behaviour remains the default, while the trait vocabulary creates a clean path for genuinely different planetary ecologies.
  • Optional local extensions can contribute dossier notes, read-only findings, layers, health checks, and search records through a versioned API.

  • The vector map is now produced from marching-square contours rather than tracing coarse cell rectangles. Coastlines and filled land shapes are smoother, and stale vector outputs are rebuilt when required.
  • Large-format map generation keeps the original simulation authoritative while providing cleaner cartography for export and close inspection.

Geological history and resources

  • Large igneous provinces and flood-basalt events can now emerge from tectonic and mantle activity, with their surface expression available to later analysis.
  • Banded iron formations are modeled as a distinct resource family tied to eligible ancient crust and oxygenation-era windows rather than being placed as generic ore noise.
  • Reef-derived limestone now follows warm, shallow marine environments, adding another climate-and-geography-dependent material.

Security and private local operation

  • Lore from project backups is now treated as untrusted input. Markdown is rendered through an inert-document sanitizer with strict element, attribute, and URL allowlists before it can enter the live dashboard; dangerous HTML, event handlers, images, scripts, embedded documents, forms, styles, and executable URL schemes are removed.
  • Wiki links and Lore Editor option lists escape imported names instead of assembling live handlers or option markup from author text.
  • Every endpoint that resolves a world now shares one containment check. Crafted world IDs can no longer traverse out of the local library through map files, atlas styles, names, lore overrides, exports, plates, or re-simulation.
  • Re-simulation rejects unknown projects, malformed seeds and non-object override data, and refuses concurrent work on the same project instead of interleaving writes.
  • JSON writes and responses replace non-finite numbers with valid null values; configuration overrides reject NaN and infinity before they can silently corrupt sea level or other numerical fields.
  • Mutation requests have bounded bodies and malformed JSON, invalid numbers, negative or invalid Content-Length values, and over-large input now receive explicit 4xx responses rather than dropping the local connection.
  • Atlas no longer loads fonts or executable code from Google Fonts or public CDNs. All dashboard scripts are vendored; a damaged install reports its missing local assets clearly instead of contacting a third party.

Recoverable Trash and local storage

  • Library now includes a visible Trash with Restore, Delete permanently, Empty trash, disk usage, and expiry information.
  • Completed worlds are recoverable for 30 days; cancelled, failed, or incomplete projects are retained for seven days. Expiry is applied when Trash is opened, making deletion predictable rather than running as a hidden background task.
  • A 5 GB soft limit produces an explicit review warning but never silently destroys a recent completed world.
  • Restoring prefers the original project identity and safely creates a new identity if that ID has since been reused, without overwriting the newer project.
  • Update downloads are pruned only after the replacement installer has completed SHA-256 verification, preventing old installers from accumulating while preserving the last usable download if an update fails.

Corrected Köppen dry-climate classification

  • New and re-simulated worlds now apply Köppen's actual rainfall-seasonality rule: whether at least 70% of annual precipitation falls in the warm half-year, the cold half-year, or neither.
  • The warm and cold halves are ranked per cell from that location's own seasonal temperatures, so hemispheres resolve correctly, and precipitation is weighted by orbital residence time for eccentric orbits.
  • The previous classifier measured general seasonality instead of rainfall timing and could assign the cold-season constant to evenly watered ground. The corrected model produces more credible dry, grassland, forest, and Mediterranean transitions.
  • world_config.json records biome_model_version. Existing saved worlds are never silently reclassified on open; version 1 remains reproducible from its saved configuration, while version 2 is the default for new work.

Presentation, World workspace, and map recovery

  • Campaign player mode now survives a page reload, application restart, or crash for the same world and campaign. It returns to the saved player-visible layer without exposing the author dashboard.
  • Missing or deleted Campaign presentation data fails closed with a clear recovery screen. Player-region links are inert while presenting, and only an explicit Exit presentation action clears the saved state.
  • The World workspace's diagnostics and controls can be collapsed into a distraction-free map view. Expanding long health findings no longer pushes the globe below an unreachable viewport.
  • Saved worlds recover their generated map catalogue after a local-service interruption instead of remaining in a false “Maps unavailable” state. Project JSON and manifests are served with no-store caching so a restarted local process cannot be confused with a stale cached dashboard.
  • Library thumbnails try one known fallback and then show an honest “No preview rendered” state. Missing maps no longer trigger an infinite retry loop against the local server.

Robustness and edge cases

  • Completed generation jobs are retired from memory while recent logs and every running job remain available for reconnection and cancellation.
  • Empty-ocean seed scans no longer index a missing landmass; silhouette measurements use spherical coordinates rather than distorted map-sheet pixels.
  • Degenerate one-plate states safely fall back when no boundary anchor candidates exist.
  • Latitude-band summaries keep one stable schema even for empty bands and worlds without land.

  • World-library, Trash, and HTTP paths now resolve through the same runtime data-root seam, improving portable builds and isolated tests.

the worldbuilding workspace upgrade

This is the largest CartoVox alpha update so far. It moves the project beyond generating a finished world and turns that world into a place an author can explore, revise, present, and use across a long-running story or campaign.

Campaign and player maps

  • Create multiple campaign profiles for one world, each with its own player-facing title and summary.
  • Decide exactly which map layers and lore categories players may see, then reveal individual secret places only when the story reaches them.
  • Open a focused presentation mode that hides the author dashboard and presents only the permitted map, places, regions, and journeys.
  • Save journey routes and regional lenses to a campaign. Route handles can be moved directly on the map without altering the physical simulation.
  • Campaign data is stored locally beside the world and is included in revision/checkpoint preservation.

Explore the generated world in Studio

  • Turn on a filterable Lore overlay for capitals, settlements, ports, passes, places of power, and author story pins. Selecting a marker opens its generated context and author canon without searching output folders.
  • Click anywhere—or choose a named atlas region—to open a wrap-aware Regional Lens with a high-resolution crop, several physical views, measured terrain and climate, resources, water features, and nearby named lore.
  • Use six curated cartographer desks for royal surveying, blue-water navigation, field naturalism, court history, monastic copying, and forbidden lore. Each desk honestly marks views that were not generated.
  • Lore search now returns bounded, relevant excerpts around each match instead of retaining large unrelated sections.

Parent-linked regional maps

  • Promote any Regional Lens into a durable child-map project without resampling the planet or losing its coordinate system.
  • Inherited settlements, realms, places of power, passes, and story pins retain stable parent-world identities even after the child map is edited.
  • Add independent regional notes, local pins, and hand-drawn routes; refresh inherited features after the parent world changes.
  • Longitude wrapping is preserved at the world seam, and child maps record the parent revision they came from.

Journey Laboratory 2

  • Compare Balanced, Fastest, Safer, and Trade-minded routes instead of receiving only one answer.
  • Inspect elevation profiles, total ascent and descent, route divergence, seasonal conditions, crossings, hazards, and ocean-current assistance.
  • Estimate food, water, pack-animal fodder, practical reserve capacity, and the full demand across the longest dry stretch. Atlas now calls out journeys that need staged caches or resupply.
  • Surface named market stops, local geological or ecological goods, realm-border legs, abstract toll exposure, and expected border delay.
  • Save a solved route to Campaign and continue adjusting it as an authored story track.

Chronicle: editable human history

  • Keep geological Deep Time separate from the history of people. Chronicle imports the generated lore timeline into editable eras without changing the tectonic simulation.
  • Add settlements, political events, wars, disasters, migrations, borders, and routes as point, line, or area geometry on the world map.
  • Play eras in order, select different base maps, and keep persistent consequences visible after the era in which they began.
  • Imported events retain stable links to their source lore entries, while authored events remain independently editable.

Deep Time, diagnostics and guided repair

  • Deep Time histories now have play/pause, multiple playback speeds, looping, a clear era counter, and a concise account of each era's dominant tectonic events. Promoting an era into a world remains an explicit author decision.
  • Simulation-health findings can jump to the relevant layer and cell, prepare a conservative sculpt operation where appropriate, or focus the exact Advanced setting responsible for a configurable condition.
  • Repair revisions record whether the original finding resolved, improved, persisted, or worsened instead of treating regeneration as an unmeasured success.

Better candidate search and generation UX

  • Changing the starting topology keeps the author's thesis, Must have, Avoid, and non-topology choices instead of silently replacing the brief.
  • Candidate scoring distinguishes measured checks from constraints that still require author review; previews are clearly labelled approximate and no longer claim a universal 100% match.
  • Preview cards show a building state, explain that cell inspection begins after commitment, clarify comparison scales, use “Remove from comparison,” and keep atlas/completion copy aligned with what was actually generated or skipped.
  • Responsive navigation, mobile map sizing, map-category transitions, progress controls, and completed-dialog accessibility received a full polish pass.

Reliability and authoring fixes

  • City renames now use the correct stable cities override bucket and rebuild every dependent export.
  • In-progress and failed generations have explicit Library cards and cannot be opened as committed or legacy projects.
  • Active generations cannot be removed from the Library, and the server rejects stale or direct deletion requests with HTTP 409 until the worker has terminated.

  • Native prompt() dialogs were replaced with Atlas modals so candidate notes, rejection reasons, and named checkpoints work in embedded desktop webviews.

Faster and more controllable atlas rendering

  • Choose Draft or Publication finish, world/continent/region sheet groups, and village-label density before a build.
  • Progress identifies every plate and recalibrates its estimate from completed plate timings.
  • Stop safely after the current plate, keep the completed work, and render deferred plates later from saved world data without re-running the simulation.
  • Atlas copy now reflects the real cost: publication plates can take most of a full build rather than merely “a few minutes.”

Linux desktop application

  • CartoVox now ships as an x64 .deb alongside the Apple Silicon macOS, Intel macOS, and Windows installers.
  • The package installs the frozen application under /opt/atlas-studio, adds a safe atlas-studio launcher, icon, and Applications-menu entry, and declares the desktop libraries required by its bundled Qt WebEngine window.
  • Testers do not need Python. Worlds, settings, beta access, logs, and verified updates use the standard per-user ~/.local/share/atlas-studio/ location and remain local.
  • The in-app updater recognizes the exact Linux package for the current architecture, downloads it only from the allowlisted release feed, verifies its SHA-256 digest, and opens it through the system package handler. Installation remains an explicit user action.
  • The release workflow now builds and smoke-tests Linux under a virtual display, validates Debian metadata and the desktop entry, and publishes the package in the same checksum manifest as the other platforms.
  • The Debian package declares the complete Qt XCB runtime set used by the bundled interface, and CI rejects any package whose platform plugin still has an unresolved shared-library dependency.

Compatibility

Existing worlds remain readable. Campaigns, child maps, and Chronicles are created only when an author chooses to use them. Older worlds can use these authoring workflows immediately when their saved summaries and numerical fields are available; no physical re-simulation is required. Legacy static maps remain visible where the newer scientific arrays were never generated.

What changed

Correct world recipes and honest candidate scoring

  • Generated worlds now retain their actual recipe—such as Inland Sea, Archipelago, or Ice Age—when the initial revision is recorded and when the project is reopened. A later Generate no longer silently falls back to Balanced.
  • Selecting a starting silhouette preserves the thesis, story frame, Must have, Avoid, and author notes already written in the brief.
  • Candidate cards now distinguish measured checks from constraints that still need author review. Atlas no longer calls a candidate a 100% brief match when part of the request could not be evaluated numerically.

Lake topology and export confidence

  • Lake-outlet health failures now include a View location when a real inconsistency is detected. The hydrology graph schema is version 2 and exports hydrologically_open explicitly.
  • A reduced end-to-end world-generation regression now verifies the saved lake graph and simulation-health report together, in addition to the synthetic hydrology suite.

Candidate and map-workspace usability

  • Candidate previews show a Building preview state and no longer invite cell inspection before a world has been generated and saved.
  • Changing a map category immediately opens its first available layer, avoiding a mismatched category, image, and legend.
  • Mobile map height follows the map’s real aspect ratio, reducing the large black letterbox seen on narrow screens.
  • Compare now says Remove from comparison, explains the coast-complexity scale, and uses the same measured/review badge language as candidate cards.
  • Completion messages list what was actually built and explicitly say when the illustrated atlas was skipped. Cancel is removed from keyboard and screen-reader navigation after a run ends.
  • The Atlas description now correctly refers to seven cartographic styles.

Better story signals and cleaner diagnostics

  • Cradle selection seeks ecological variety among comparably suitable sites, and rain-fed cultures expose their local niche rather than repeating one identical archetype.
  • Repeated continental-crust adjustment notices are deduplicated during candidate searches.

What changed

Hydrology V2

  • Terrain depressions are now inventoried with a spherical Priority-Flood hierarchy. Tiny artifacts are filled, shallow obstructions can be hydraulically breached, and substantial basins are preserved instead of treating every hollow the same way.
  • Hillslope runoff follows a continuous D-infinity-style bearing and can split between two downslope receivers. It then converges into one directed, loop-free channel graph for rendering, measurement, export, and inspection.
  • Rivers no longer run across lake surfaces. Incoming channels stop at the shore; each open lake has one solved outlet, while closed lakes retain water and can become fresh, saline, seasonal, or salt-pan systems.
  • Lake levels and regimes now use explicit annual and seasonal water budgets: catchment inflow, direct precipitation, evaporation, seepage, storage, and outflow. Lake-surface rain is not double-counted as terrestrial runoff, and upstream lake outflow is propagated through downstream lake chains.

Seasonal rivers and physical channel form

  • Four-season runoff now responds to rain, snow storage and degree-day melt, inherited glacier melt, soil/bedrock permeability, canopy interception, permafrost, groundwater recharge, recession, and baseflow.
  • Channels are classified as perennial, seasonal, or ephemeral from mean, low, and peak discharge rather than drainage area alone.
  • The directed reach graph reports Strahler order, mean/minimum/peak discharge, permanence, slope, sediment supply, bank cohesion, confinement, bankfull width and depth, floodplain width, and a physically constrained morphology: confined, wandering, meandering, braided, or rare anastomosing.
  • Delivered river lines follow continuous flow tangents with seam-safe sub-cell curves, reducing raster right-angle elbows while keeping one canonical topology across the relief map, atlas, SVG, GeoJSON, inspector, and health report.

Dashboard, inspection, and data exports

  • New filterable dashboard views expose the 32 largest watersheds, river hierarchy, river permanence, and lake regimes. Their colour keys, river/lake overlays, full-size view, globe texture, and PNG download behave like the existing scientific maps.
  • Cell inspection now includes watershed and depression IDs, seasonal runoff and discharge, snowpack, snowmelt, groundwater storage, substrate permeability, permafrost, river regime, stream order, channel form and dimensions, lake depth, regime, and outlet status.
  • world_data.npz and the scientific GeoTIFF bundle now include the Hydrology V2 fields. hydrology_graph.json preserves depression hierarchy, outlet-defined basins, lake water-balance nodes, and the directed reach network.
  • GeoJSON exports now contain attributed river reaches and lake nodes. The layered SVG uses the same canonical river geometry.
  • Simulation health now checks standing-water overlap, branch and reach cycles, watershed coverage, lake outlet topology, lake mass conservation, raster hairpins, and delivered sub-cell right-angle turns.

Presets and controls

  • Advanced Settings exposes documented controls for depression conditioning, infiltration, groundwater, snowmelt, river thresholds and permanence, sediment, cohesion, floodplains, meandering, braiding, evaporation, seepage, and lake seasonality.
  • Pangaea, archipelago, inland-sea, twin-hemisphere, ice-age, and tropical presets now carry distinct hydrologic behavior instead of changing only terrain and climate.

What changed

Interactive scientific maps

  • Rainfall, biome, soil, bedrock, resource, and realm colour keys are now interactive. Select individual classes or use All and None to isolate exactly what you want to inspect.
  • Rivers and lakes can be hidden independently, including on the soil and bedrock maps, and a 30 degree reference grid can be added when useful.
  • Filtered maps update the 2D workspace, globe texture, full-size view, and PNG download without changing the saved simulation.
  • Bedrock now has its own dashboard view. Resource filtering reads every overlapping prospectivity field instead of only the dominant resource class.
  • Iron remains rust-red while geothermal prospects are now magenta, eliminating their previous visual ambiguity.
  • Large keys have an explicit More/Less control, so no class is hidden behind an invisible scroll area.

  • Simulated realm territories is now a separate map with travel-cost territories, distinct colours, frontiers, and unclaimed wilderness.
  • Grimdark maps no longer draw political boundaries as crimson danger lines. Red is reserved for volcanic, blighted, or supernatural hazards.
  • Existing compatible worlds automatically rebuild outdated clean-base, realm, and Grimdark styles when opened.

Deep Time usability and resolution

  • The geological-era scrubber has a substantially larger interactive track and thumb, making long 420–600 Myr histories practical to navigate.
  • A new Timeline detail setting offers a faster standard grid or a sharper detailed tectonic grid.
  • Deep Time frames render at higher resolution with smoother terrain, clearer captions, and readable text. Compatible low-resolution histories are upgraded lazily from their saved numerical archive.
